Actually, trying to argue it's a win for the NHLPA is patently stupid in any case. Every extra dollar Nylander makes is a dollar someone else won't.

Since draisatl was brought up as a comparison, shouldn't you determine what the extra 2 ufa years would have added to the deal?

Yeah, sorry Gordon. You're going to struggle to explain that contract in any context.

Burke ripping the contract, love it.

He would have let him sit out, he doesn't feel the Leafs are a Stanley Cup threat.

Who in the East looks like they can take the Leafs? Tampa? Washington?

I don't know, I know it's super easy to hate on the Leafs but they already had a dynamic potent offense that just added yet another dynamic offensive player. They're IMO a legit threat despite the D corps.

I'm hoping it is Buffalo. That would be great comedy.

For some teams - many teams - that is an attractive situation. You have to tip your hat to Dubas for that fact.
"Puts on tinfoil hat".....

Any chance they planned it out this way? for him to wait until the last minute and make the contract it is to work for everyone?

Kypreos was suggesting the same thing and that the 6.97 Cap hit was nice and tradeable.

I'd say it depends on how this season plays out. If he goes full Pasternak you got to keep him and move other pieces.

I'm assuming he means 6-7 best player on the team regardless of position?

Matthews
Marner
Tavares
Rielly
Andersen
Nylander

Makes sense..

I really liked the teeth in that comment too. He was sticking it to the recently pompous Friedman. The Leafs are top heavy and d shallow, and everyone knows it. They're still contenders but it was good to see Burke set him in his place as these "insiders" are now just butt-kissers to get insider scoops from their team management sources.

The concept has been discussed for the last few weeks on Toronto radio. However, if they had this planned out he would have signed this morning I think. This is just the standard Lewis Grossman strategy. The last offer before the deadline will be the best. For Gaudreau it was a player deadline of right before the season starts. For Nylander it was a player imposed deadline of not wanting to miss the season and make sure he is covered if he gets traded.

I really don't feel he's earned this contract, and am surprised that the Leafs caved. Oh well. Enjoy cap hell.

No, he is worth $12M. Marner worth another $12M and Mathews worth $15M, and Leafs will be in cap hell.

Not sure Burke knows anything about building a championship team, he is more of an inheritor of championship teams. A bad hockey move is giving Ron Wilson a contract extension, signing Nylander is not a bad hockey move.

Well done Dubas.

6.97 cap is less than a lot of posters suggested Nylander would get.

Nylander simply isn't worth 8+ like some suggested.

First off, there's a huge difference between 6 years and 8 years with 2 additional UFA years tacked on.

Second off, 41.77M in 5.70 years is 7.3M...
