A little off topic, but how the hell does Anaheim have a combined 15 losses (5 loser points) to 13 wins, a -14 goal differential, and is second place in the division? Just asinine. Why won't they just launch themselves into the sun? ####ing hate that team.
I can't decide if I would feel more pleasure seeing the flames sweep the ducks, or the no goods in a playoff series.

The correct answer is sweeping the Ducks after officially eliminating the Oilers from the playoffs.

Good on Smith for stopping what he should have, though. The goal was high danger (not by advanced stats definition, but by virtue of the situation - being a one timer fed from behind), but also snuck through him. Lots of routine stuff, one good save, one goal. Most goalies win that game.
|
Or... Smith is just a really likable guy and everyone really wants to see him succeed again, you can hear it when we have Hrudy doing color as well, his teammates, the organization, and sports press are all rooting for the guy.
Why does it have to be some conspiracy lol

Pretty meh game. Score should have been a lot more lopsided than it was. Petersen was outstanding for the Kings. Flames defense was outstanding at keeping the Kings to the outside, but the Kings didn't really make much of a push at any time. They were waiting on mistakes that just didn't come.
Mike Smith still scares the #### out of me. I don't care if he made a save on a breakaway (a first this season?) every time someone directs a puck at his net I catch myself holding my breath. I hate that feeling. I hate seeing weak goals, and for every big save Smith makes, he lets in a weak goal. Last night was no different. Smith has to get a lot better just to get back to being average. Still one of the worst goaltenders in the NHL.
Derek Ryan. I just don't see anything in his game other than his ability to win a face off. Offensively, plays die on his stick. He's not good at using his linemates and not a good passer. His shot is non-existent and he only seems to find the net when setup for an open net opportunity. But he's still trotted out there on the PP to absolutely nothing. Peter's Pet must wash a mean car.
I pity James Neal. Everyone wants him to get untracked, but he's saddle with Derek Ryan as his center. Neal is a void of scoring chances right now because his center doesn't have a clue how to set him up. If there was ever a guy that could use a big talented center with silky soft mitts it is James Neal. Give Jankowski some time with Neal and see if they can find some chemistry.
Oliver Kylington continues to impress. A very solid game by the young rearguard. He's got all the tools and he seems to be putting it all together. Flames are very lucky to have such a stable of young blueliners to rely upon over the next half decade. Hanifin, Anderson, and Kylington all 21. Valimaki at 19. Heck, add in Brodie, Hamonic, and Stone at only 28, you have to smile. Best defensive corps the Flames have had in a very long time, and the majority of them with some high skill at moving the puck. Good times!
Most of the pieces are there for this team. If they could find a goaltender, and straighten out the player usage, this team could seriously be a contender. They may be a little light, but their speed game makes up for the lack of banging. This is a fun group to watch.

Interesting that Vegas, Dallas and LA played a very similar game against the flames. It looks like a strategy of plugging up every zone and gettingthe puck against the boards. It makes for less exciting hockey, but a lot closer to what the Flames will face in the playoffs. The flames have been able to counter with good speed, but the games tend to be a lot closer score wise and a coin flip for one or two breaks.
Especially against the kings, getting the puck off the boards and off the end boards quickly (either via goalie or defenseman) is the easiest way to beat them. The flames played this beautifully and hence LA had 5 shots in the first 30 minutes.
I am trying to figure out if there is another gear or dimension to this team. I think the pieces are there, but between now and the end of the season they need to find another dynamic scoring line. Whether it is through internal growth (Janko finding another gear), or a Jeff Carter type on the 3rd line, I think there is one piece missing.

their game last night against the hurricanes was a thoroughly classic ducks game. they got absolutely destroyed and would have let in 4-5 goals if not for extraordinary saves from gibson and poor finishing from the canes. instead, the ducks hang around in a game they didn't deserve to be in at all, get a flukey late tying goal out of nowhere, and somehow win the game in overtime. you'd think that their luck would run out at some point, and yet they keep hanging around. infuriating.
i'd love to see the flames sweep the ducks, but knowing the flames and the ducks, i think they would make it much harder than it has to be on themselves

Tkachuk was quiet.
LA is post apex.
Good to see Johnny get the puck luck after several much better looks

Agreed.
@DM you are looking for flaws in her work. Cassie had good insight on the zone entries and overall provided fair commentary. She made at least three separate references to that puck getting through Smith, how he would like to have that one back and how this has been what has been getting through him the last few weeks.
You know that things are going well for the flames when our biggest complaints are about the commentary from a decent colour personality who also happened to be a women's hockey great.

Flames definitely deserved the 2 points in that one. Smith gets the win but still didn't look that great imo. He still let in a goal he shouldn't have and while he has won his last 2 games they have been against Arizona and LA. I'm glad he's building confidence but Rittich has still played better against tougher opponents. If Rittich plays last night it's arguably a shutout win for Calgary. They need to go back to Rittich on the next road trip and start putting some distance between them and the rest the division

I don't know...
My preferred option would be:
Oilers sneak into the wild card, we best them easily in round 1 even though McDavid plays 38 minutes per game.
Round 2 sweep the ducks.
Round 3 beat the Jets.
SCF: beat Tampa in game 6. Sam Bennett scores winning goal. It is not disallowed.

I really want to see neal with jankowski. Its time to give neal a better offensive linemate that will not break up the current top 6. And jankowski deserves a larger role too.
