It was great to see how the Bush, Clinton's and Obamas got or get along. Great words from Barack on Bush. I can guarantee the words on Trumps twitter regarding the passing were not written by Donald or Melania on the other hand.

Chances are that there will be a joint statement of mourning by the NRA, Aryan Nation and Alex Jones

Aside from the heinousness of the Gulf War for Oil, when I think of Bush I think of his zealous support of the war on drugs, and "tough on crime" bills that only lead to the mass incarceration of black people. Prison and jail populations exploded during his tenure. He wasn't afraid to appeal to the worst in his constituency with anti affirmative action appeals and fear tactics on civil rights. He wasn't a good guy. I don't think any neoconservatives are and I'm not ashamed to admit that.

Donald Trump taking things to a new low doesn't make any of these crappy presidents great men all of a sudden.

Out of curiosity, did we know in the 80s the effect of "tough on crime" bills, and the actual effect with the war on drugs?

I mean, we know now they're horrible. But, the theory behind them does make some sense, if everyone says no to drugs, then the war on drugs would be fairly easy; if people are deterred by stiff penalties for criminal behaviour, it would seem to reason crime would go down.

We know there are other factors at play, but did they realize that then?

It's possible they did, I don't know (hence me asking).

The war on drugs and specifically crack cocaine was advocated by the affected communities. We know a lot more now then we did then. Though that was more under Raegan. By the time Bush took over you had the high incarceration rates of black males as a result of the sentencing differences between crack and powdered cocaine.

The usual suspects with their self righteousness.

How do we make effective change? #### on the deceased.

The guy was a mass murderer, a war criminal and just an over all scum bag. Not going to show respect to this guy.

Bush can rot in hell.

He always seemed like the Mr Burns of recent times. His dismantling of the Soviet Union is a legacy we're seeing played out now. Sending out the secret service to buy crack is a pretty funny story though. Their dealer got lost and had to phone back numerous times for directions to the park across the street from the White House.

I'm always puzzled by the "we didn't know what would happen" argument when it comes to the war on drugs and tough on crime bills. That's a load of bullcrap. You know who knew and were shouting it from the rooftops before day one? Black people! They knew they were being disproportionately targeted and locked up. It didn't take 30 years to figure it out for the rest of society either.

Sure he has left a massive trail of destruction and despair on such a scale that its reverberation will be felt for a century, but he died, so we should be nice about it. Please ignore the mountain of innocent dead bodies and shattered states all over the globe while we bow our heads in silent lament.

It never ceases to amaze me the forgiveness people readily dole for the heinous acts of US presidents.

That’s just revisionist history. Or at least history that is in dispute.

https://www.wnyc.org/story/312823-bl...eek-dismantle/

The black community advocated for tougher drug laws at the start of the war on drugs. Whether this had changed by Bush Sr or if it took longer I am not aware but the War inn drugs initially was a well supported policy across all demographics.

We should express the same amount of respect for Saddam Hussein, Bin Laden, and for Putin when he passes.

Do you think that is a valid comparison? In both intents and outcomes.
