New Radio Stations
Hey everyone, does anyone know any more info about the new radio stations?
I signed up for the email announcments for 92.9 (X FM) and got an email today saying they are playing around this week.
Listening right now to some Tragically Hip. I thought we were improving over CJAY???

Thanks Jayems for the info. I caught that thread the first time around but took another look.
For anyone interested, the station is on the air right now.

Ok, so if I understand you clearly, you want lots of Nickelback, with an extra side of Nickelback.
So, let’s hear your Top 5 bands you want on X92.9.
(Top 6 really with Nickelback OWNING the top spot)
Gotta roll, I need to hang up my Creed poster.

i think the thing is called CANCON, I might be wrong on the name, but the radio HAS to play a certain % of canadian content. That is why every damn station plays nickelback.
A new station sounds good, but I dont really have any hopes for it. Maybe Ill listen to it next time I get in the car.

That's awesome. It is blatantly sarcastic to the point of being hilarious. It's good they know what the city doesn't need and are playing off of people's emotions.

I love the comments though..some people missed the joke.
I'm actually interested to see how this station works out. They are at least giving the initial impression that they are going to move away from standard rock radio and have a more interesting rotation.

Checked em out on the way to the grocery store..
Played sublime!!! Never heard that on a Calgary radio station before... had some peppers in there too, and they played "Jump Around" ...?
That was a little weird... but, I guess a bunch of drunk white irishmen singing jump around and who "have more rhymes than the bible has psalms.." well...

They seem to be playing a lot of stuff from everywhere right now- probably so people can listen and then tell them what they want to hear.
Hopefully not too many emo kids start posting music- I am all for some good music but emo is not music. Nor a lifestyle.
Anywho, I have heard lots of Tragically Hip on there, and lots of Foo Fighters.

What's emo?
I tuned in this morning on the way to work. I hope they improve the sound quality because it was awful.

The reason they are testing is to work out all the bugs. It will sound fine.

Coincidentally, a CP member's name pops up in the story underneath the Calgary scoop. Any more Cook Island's trips kicking around Sample?

Thats what Q107 started out saying too...and playing obscure "B' sides from lesser light albums of the mainstream stars like Clapton/Cream, Zeppelin, Polic, Moody Blues even. Stuff rarely heard.
Within 3 months it wasn't as edgy...6 months even less so, and a year, it was mainsteam "classic" rock with some edgier stuf sprinkled in.
I suspect the same will happen here..make a big noise about being different, and an alternative at the start and make fun of other stations playlists....but when the initial buzz wears down, and hard BBM numbers start rolling in and the "alternative" crowd that they are trying to target aren't tuning in as thought (which allows them to set ad rates accordingly), changes will have to be made to appeal a little more mainstream audience/advertisers, nevermind the CanCon considerations.

I dont think that will happen here, playing NEW less mainstream rock music is different than playing the B sides of albums from the 70s. Music today is better than ever before...so many bands that it is almsot too much.

Very impressed so far, this station is right up my alley, but I think a lot of what they're playing right now isn't sustainable in this market over a long period.
The station will probably morph more into a slightly less edgy CFOX 99.3 Vancouver equivalent...which is one of my favourite stations.
Unfortunately I think the Calgary radio market is a very fickle one, and making something work beyond what already out there (especially this format) will be difficult. Hopefully they can pull it off, because this city really needs more diverse radio.
