I don't know. I'd be very surprised if they make it, I think they're done already. They have to go on a fairly good pace and pass a lot of teams between now and the playoffs.

We could trade 6 good players and firsts for mcdavid and he would still be coming to a better supporting cast than he came from.

They are 3 points out of 2nd place in the division, with a game in hand and with 57 games left... I don't think we can say they're done yet.

They're getting points to stay in it but given how unimpressively they're doing it, against not good competition, you cant help but expect the dog days of the season against better competition is going to bury them in the basement.

Coilers only hope is Vezina quality goaltending from Koskinen. even slightly above average goaltenfing and they are out. Average goaltending and they are in the conversation for Hughes.

The best case scenario is that Oilers miss the playoff and McDavid doesn't win the Art Ross.

I was watching the third period of tonights Oilers game and it may very well have been the most boring hockey game I've ever witnessed. 100% perimeter hockey, every passing play going along the boards and the vast majority of zone entries are dump and chase. All the focus on safe plays and limiting mistakes against a Kings team that were completely incapable of completing a pass throughout the period. Playing for the tie has paid off somewhat so far in that they have been able to squeeze a few wins out of it, but it's not likely to last once better teams figure out the gameplan, and damn is it ever terrible to watch.

Welcome to Hitchcock hockey Oilers! McDavid with three assist in the last four games. I bet he's real happy with how his Art Ross bid is shaping up right now.

I bet that guy feels he doesn't fit in there. Full sentences, grammar, punctuation, paragraphs and logic.

He's too good to be there.

Oilers, if waiver claims make up half your team, that's probably not a good thing. Just my two cents.

Hey.

McDavid is happy.

He just wants to win (enough games to barely miss the playoffs) Baby!

Various prospects/picks/plugs could fill this out to balance it (possibly salary retention), but how about this for a starting framework:

To Toronto:
McDavid
a good value defenseman or prospect that is very close - not sure who best fits that bill from either team

To Arizona:
Matthews
Lucic (less real $$ than AAV)

To Edmonton:
OEL
Nylander

Edmonton gets the privilege of overpaying another young forward who has been propped up by playing beside/behind generational talents, while dumping a boat anchor contract. Their defence would pretty quickly become pretty decent by parachuting in a legit #1, and everyone else could play in the slot they actually belong.

Toronto is giving up the most, but also getting the best player in the deal. If the Matthews vs. Babcock tension is legit, it resolves that, and gives cost certainty going forward (maybe they could keep Matthews signed to an 11M Tavares limit, but McDavid is probably worth the extra 1.25). Not saying Matthews is injury-prone, but it is at least a little concerning. Otherwise it's flipping Nylander into futures/a cheap defensemen, which is the likely outcome anyways.

Arizona pushes their chips into the middle and brings the prodigal son home. Creates a big hole in defence, but they have enough forward pieces to flip and fix if needed. It basically turns their team into Edmonton's structure for the last decade, but it might not be so bad since they don't have quite the same culture of false-hope and unrealistic expectations. They have to take on Lucic, but otherwise they're flipping OEL for Matthews, which is pretty much a no brainer.

"We can't judge our game as a line on goals & assists. We've just got to keep going with what we've been doing." Lucic discusses his continued chemistry alongside Kassian & Brodziak

As good a place for any for this gem. William, born in Calgary, wont be waiving his NMC going to Edmonton anytime soon after his dad wisely didn’t fall for the Lowe bait, and backed out just in time. Heatley, Danny, another Calgary kid did the same thing, though not as official, as have numerous other players spurned the Oilers since the two faced, manipulative, destructively meddling ways of Kevin Lowe came to light post Mike Comrie and post Chris Pronger. Good news for all, the goings on in Edmonton have allowed Lowe to regain the control he lost for a couple years.

https://www.nhl.com/oilers/news/oile...ander/c-429952

You can just read the rage in Kevin Lowe’s words in here, sending out an statement to Nhl.com and pursuing legal avenues (which went nowhere) is him really thinking he’s smarter then everyone so that the whole world knows his injustice. The same guy who wanted Comrie to pay back money to allow him to trade him (and missing out on Corey Perry). And his two headed coaching monster. And his offer sheet debacles. Etc.

Even though he was apparently a decent GM candidate, Lowe, out of spite like he so often does, grabbed Tambelleni out of Vancouver when the same Mike Gillis became GM of the Canucks a year or so later. Reasonable people would think that Lowe was doing it because he was the best candidate, but they don’t know Lowe. Who fired a coach via Skype to get a newer and shinier one they would prove his creative thinking.
