What is Nylander asking for (I thought it was in the range of $8 million/season)? It seems like for the past few weeks we keep hearing they are only $300k apart.

Taking a while to get to 5000

He wanted Draisaitl money going by the recent reports from Friedman & the like.
Edit - But yes, currently seems they are around $7M

I've heard Draisaitl money as well, if it was under 7 a year, this deal would be done

It's been widdled down. Wasn't the rumored first... ugh I hate this "ask" from Gio's camp over 8m? same thing here. Big number ...ugh "ask" agent and GM meet in the middle (usually 6-7m)

That is per HNIC this past Saturday. The belief is Nylander will accept a 6 x $6.9 mil/year deal, but as of yet Toronto hasn't put that on the table.
On Saturday Friedman said the Leafs and Nylander's camp were $500k apart. Two days ago Friedman said the two sides are $300k apart in his 31 thought column

Term plays a huge difference Draisaitl signed 8 years, that doesn't appear to be the rumoured term for this one. An 8x8 is not all that different than 6 years at 7 million, with a little bit less security.
With inflation and UFA prices you could easily sign:
6years*7 and 2years*10 and make 62M, except those last 2 years can be your choice of team.
In 6 years the cap could be 100M with Seattle's revenue. (It increased over 15M in the last 6 years).

300k dosent seem like a deal breaker, especially if we are talking the difference between 6.7 and 7mil AAV. Your talking a 3rd of a entry level player's salary. If they are this close, and Nylander is forfeiting ~82k per game missed, you think this this would have been inked weeks ago. Something is amiss.

Friedman also said yesterday that he would bet that regardless of signing or no signing, Nylander will not be playing in Toronto.

You wouldn't think so, but back in the day wasn't Ryan Smyth traded because they were 100k apart or something? Maybe I'm remembering it right.

I bet Nylander wants some sort of NMC and Leafs don't want to give him one. I don't blame Nylander. Why sign long term and give a discount, only to have the Leafs trade him to Arizona or Carolina a year later just so Leafs can fit Marner and Matthews under the cap.

That's just it, your bang on. They can't give him a NMC until he's UFA or arbtration eligable or something, right? So why sign a discount to make your trade value more beneficial to the bastards squeezing you for nickles.

NMC are not allowed during RFA years, so even if he negotiated one it wouldn't kick in for several years.

If they're seriously squeezing him for a few hundred K and he winds up signing under 7, I'll be baffled. The guy's worth more than that.

Actually what he said was that no matter what happens this will be Nylander's final season as a Leaf.

I actually didn't know that. Thanks. Then I'm not sure what the hold up is if it's just the alleged $300K difference.

I think the problem is both sides think they have compromised enough and don't feel like capitulating anything further.

$300K/yr over 7 years is $2.1M which seems like more of a talking point for career earnings

Nylander will get traded for a few hundred thousand a year, miss playing for a cup contender with an open window and will regret it for the rest of his life if they win.
