Rittich has had so many good games lately, smith just 1 against a bad team. Rittich deserves the start

Just speculating, but no update on Stone might mean bad news. Could mean they are trying to get a second opinion on a prognosis. Hope I am wrong.

I agree that he should start this game. That said, Smith will likely have to start 20 games of the remaining 58. The Flames need to make sure those are the most opportune games. I would hate for more than one of them to happen in the last 10 games of the season.

I am pretty sure this has already happened. Smith is still going to get starts—probably half of them, but with how things have transpired through the first quarter it seems clear to me that the Flames no longer have a set "starting goalie." It's now a rotation.

I don't get why the talking heads on the Fan keep insisting on the notion that if the Flames want to get to where they want to go, they need Smith to be the number one. Why? They for sure need a number one. But why can't that number one be Rittich? Now, I'm not saying he is going to be the starter long term yet, the sample size is still small. But he definitely has a chance to, and to definitively say Smith has to be number one if the Flames are going to have any success seems a little narrow minded and stuck in the past type thinking.
I think to be successful, we still need Smith playing well. But whether that's as a starter, a tandem, or a backup, that has yet to be determined. Right now, he's trending to be backup, and maybe a 1B tandem at best. The starter role ship is sailing quickly away IMO.

I'd give Smith LA, and Chicago (assuming he does ok vs LA) so Rittich can handle the next 4

Smith will be gone next year. The common sense thing to do would be to give Rittich more starts as a number one. let Smith be the backup where he will not have as much pressure.

Smith has never played well in Calgary, I would like to see him start on the road only.

Since we are on the topic. What does the ideal amount of starts by the end of the season look like.
I would say Rittich 48 Smith 34. That means that down the stretch it'll be 36 more for Rittich and 20 more for Smith.

The common sense thing to do with a second-year NHL goalie who started only 16 games in his first season is to give him a load something closer to a split. I am a big believer in David Rittich, but the best decision is for the team to pace him, and work him into a starter's role. That does not happen overnight.

With Stone gone long term (at least 2 months I presume) and Valimaki possibly out 1 to 4 weeks, I wonder if Treliving is confident with the remaining depth on the blue line. I suppose Prout can fill in for a couple of games if needed but that is not ideal.
How are the other Stockton defenseman doing? My guess is that Valiev would be the next call-up because he does have some NHL experience.

After Prout, the Flames have only 4 d-men under NHL contract.
Hogstrom - hasn't played this season.
Taormina - little to no effectiveness in the NHL to date.
Healey - okay showing in the preseason but no NHL experience
Valiev - just starting to get in a groove in the AHL and only 12 NHL games
I could see Treliving getting an experienced depth d-man

With Stone out, this is Kylington's big chance to show what he can do. Looking forward to see if he can step up and make next year's defensive choices really interesting.

They could sign AOM to an NHL deal as well, if they feel he is ready. Not sure why they didn't give him an NHL deal to begin with. I thought he was a decent prospect.

Big chance for Kylington. I hope he shows he is ready to be an NHLer.

^ this a possibility too.
Smith is certainly not the 'starter', and that's a good thing, and about all we know for sure right now.

The last few times Smith has won and they put him right back in were disasters. As was the time Smith simply "looked good" and they went right back to him.
Spot duty on the road should be Smith's immediate future.

I hear the Laval Rocket have a cheap, versatile, smooth-skating, solid first pass LD with 103 NHL GP and familiarity with much of Calgary's roster.
