Interesting Parenting Question
My wife noticed this the other day.
For the last week our son has slept through the night about half the time. The other half he would wake up at about 3 or so crying. When he does that we have to get up to soothe him or take him into bed with us (yes, yes, I know the cry it out theory, not my question).
Here's what's interesting.
When I put him down he sleeps through the night.
When my wife puts him down he wakes at 3am.
Last night we experimented by me putting him down, and again he slept through the night.
Why would this be?

This sounds like a case of "if I wear my red underwear the Flames win" which always ends up being true until it is not.

Are you leaving his room before he falls asleep but your wife is staying until he is out? In which case, when he wakes up briefly at night he might be surprised that his mom is no longer there.

Age of the child?

This exact same thing happened with my older son. I (dad) did bedtime basically every night for a year, then he grew out of it for no apparent reason. He's just about 5, and is now a great sleeper.

You didn't mention if your wife is breastfeeding- more specifically, if she breastfeeds him to sleep and again when he wakes up? If so, I would guess the answer has something to do with that. That stuff is like heroin for them I think.
No mention of your son's age, so sorry if he is like 12 or something and this has nothing to do with it.

A couple of things.
First and foremost don’t be ashamed to comfort your child when he’s crying. I find it heartbreaking to force your child to cry for comfort.
Second, I totally agree that it’s a small sample size. But I also found that I was the only one who was able to put my kids down when they were babies. Eventually everything evened out.

Is she nursing him and you’re putting him down with a bottle? Or maybe he’s just more full from dinner or something on the nights you put him down?

Ya, might be something to do with feeding. My boy would wake once or twice a night if he didn't nurse well, but if he sucked down a bottle he was good for the whole night. Slightly different routines might throw him off too.

Thanks folks,
The little guy is 21 months.
Bedtime routine is basically the same.
Perhaps I really do scare the monsters away? My wife says its because he loves her more so when she puts him down he wants her back, haha.
I put him down tonight so let's see what happens.
