Icon33 Habs put Alzner on waivers. UPD: Clears and assigned to AHL

Eric Engels @EricEngels
Confirmed. Alzner to waivers.

3 more years at $4.625 mil AAV. If it got to this point hard to imagine a claim. Think if he moves on to another team it will be another "bad contract" coming back to the Habs.

Ouch. This was pretty obviously a bad deal when they signed it.

Oilers? But they'd have to try and move Looch back. Impossible. Lucic is an anti-Hab (big and slow).

Chiarelli is probably frantically trying to figure out how to clear $4 million in salary to pick him up...

Feel bad for Alzner though. Gets dumped by Washington the year before they win the Cup, then gets dumped by Montreal barely one year into his contract. Though, Getting paid $4.6 million a year takes the sting off. I would imagine the Habs will want to buy him out, but eating about $1.5 million in dead cap space for six years would hurt.

Though if he bounced back with the Habs, with the Oil stuck with Alzner, it would be glorious.

Both the Oilers and Canucks could use Alzner. We could see some bad contract deck chairs being swapped

Their defense is putrid, so you can imagine how poorly he's played to not be in the lineup. Seems like a decent guy, but the contract was terrible from the start.

Lucic won't bounce back because he has the same flaw Alzner has: He's slow, and he does nothing well.

That being said, if the Subban-Weber deal is any indication, Bergevin is more than willing to take the lesser player with the larger contract back in a one-for-one deal.

The fun part, however, is that Alzner has a seven-team NTC. You can pretty much guarantee that Edmonton is on it. However, he might be willing to waive anyway since he needs a change as badly as Montreal wants him gone. And, if playing in Edmonton keeps him from being bought out sooner than otherwise, he's got a few million reasons to accept the indignity.

Well, Montreal did want Lucic a few years back.

Didn't he say he was sick of losing in Washington or something to that effect? Now he can't hold down a job with the habs? That's rough.

He said that he signed with Montreal because he "wants to win". Which, in fairness, is what everybody says when they sign with a new team.

Lucic makes $1.4M more and has a year longer on his deal. If the Oilers want that trade they definitely are adding

Just looked it up. He said "It’s very emotional to leave Washington, That part is difficult, but at the same time, I want to win."

Basically inferred that Montreal gives him a better chance to win, which is hilarious. I know it's just #### guys say when they sign with a new team but its still funny to me given current circumstances and Washington having just won the cup.

Will be interesting to see if Chia does anything desperate here to try and save his job

The smart move, honestly, is dumping Lucic on waivers himself. Not sure if Alzner will improve much of anything out there, but you know Lucic won't either.

PullRV.

I could totally see that deal backfiring.

Lucic and Pulijarvi for Alzner and something.

Sure, why not?

Lol, I forgot that A) he got one of those... and B) that GMs are signing contracts that prevent you from being demoted - regardless of your performance. Even RUSSELL and his $4M has a NMC.

NVM! Not even this 'anything could be an improvement' freebie has to pass them by

What a surprise that another terrible free agency signing that everyone could see from the day it was inked turned out to be exactly what we thought he was. Will GM's ever learn?
