Two years of worse-than-B.Sutter-hockey affords fans two years of saying good riddance to GG.
|
GG destroyed a kid who was formally an elite defensive pairing in the NHL and CP made him the constant whipping boy in every thread until recently. Two years of hell for TJ, his wife, and his family and friends when they had to read about how much the fans hated him and how horrible he was. Peters saw his potential and knew he could get back to being spectacular, but the fans were fickle, and two years of saying 'good riddance' to TJ grants him a little recognition that he in fact, was never garbage. He wasn't perfect, but he wasn't trash.
Oh, and one more thing.. like it or not...

How did kylington play? It looks like he had a pretty solid but quiet game on the score sheet with 13min TOI.

Good. Not a liability at all. lots of smart little plays. Handled himself very well in his own zone IMO.

had some bambi feet in the first period, probably just excitement. Once he settled in he made some nice defensive plays, intelligent breakouts, and also had some solid moments in the offensive zone. NHL-ready IMO.

He made some decent plays in the offensive zone. Got walked around once in the defensive zone. Overall he looked like a rookie. Didn't standout to me as great or horrible. He shows promise but Valimaki is ahead of him currently and has the bigger upside IMO. Valimaki is bigger and stronger but both have good puck skills.
We're very strong on the left with Gio, Hanifin and Valimaki. All 3 of those guys are top pairing (Gio) or have top pairing potential IMO (Hanifin/Valimaki). Kylington is unlikely to beat out any of those 3. But injuries are inevitable and he can be worked in slowly when injuries do hit. Good depth to have.
We really have an embarrassment of riches on the blue line. Not shocking a former blue liner in Treliving would make that a priority. I know some doubted his work when Hamonic was average for us last year and our scoring sucked but I think Hamonic's play this year shows that deal was just fine. And now Treliving has improved our scoring depth as well and there's still room for improvement IMO. We're 5th in goals for at the moment and that's with Bennett, Neal and Czarnik all being a bit snake bit.
Great time to be a Flames fan. Everything has fallen into place a lot better this season.

That 2nd round in the 2015 draft is just beautiful for the Flames.

Happy for Smith too... we'll need both goalies if the Flames are to get into the playoffs, so it was nice to see Smith have a solid outing.
i'll be curious to see if he goes back to Rittich right away or plays Smith again.... personally i think they should just play until they lose - tho the back to back games throws that rotation off a bit

Honestly. How nice is it to have actual solid defensive depth? Gone are the days we spent hoping and praying that Wothshisnameagain would e v e n t u a l l y make it to the team, or that Mark 'who?' Cundari would become the star to replace an outgoing Bouwmeester.
Every single one of our defencemen have the ability to play #4 and up. We've got so many of them, one is being/will be made to sit in the pressbox most nights.

Liked Peters noting that Brodie has been skating well lately, is dynamic with the puck, and his gaps have been impeccable the last 3 or 4 games.
Brodie, Hamonic, Bennett, Gio, just to name a few, are looking so much better under Peters. Hanifin is really starting to settle in and pick his spots well too.
I shudder to think that if Peters, who was Tre’s guy, had continued on in Carolina, that Tre may possibly have somehow kept the old coach. Scary stuff.
I really think the Flames have one of, if not THE best all around D in the league.

Excellent performance. The cycle game was in play tonight! CGY was very disciplined in how they wanted to play and it paid off. They could've scored 2-3 more.
The challenge is to maintain this level. Winning the little battles, outworking the opponent allows their incredible depth and abilities to shine through. Impressive but it's still not their best effort - more is possible.
