Electric Razors

So, I think I'm about done with using traditional razors like the gilettes of the world. I have to shave 3 times a week now and the recovery time for my face is such where I avoid shaving now.

So. Back to electric for me. Any recommendations? Whats all the hooplah now with these things?

Love mine and rarely use a straight razor. Also have a electric beard trimmer. Razors aren’t expensive so I’d go with a really good one like a Braun or Philips. I like rechargeables. They perform well.

I was going to suggest you get the one that jizzes cooling gel on your face (the Philips Nivea CoolSkin shaver) but they discontinued those in favor of wet/dry shavers (that make a ton more sense).


With the funny option off the table, get the Philips StormTrooper. Or the wet/dry razor I mentioned.

Do you take the wet one into the shower with you or is this a dumb question? Do you ... do shave after the shower?

I've been back and forth over the years between Braun and Phillips and IMO Brauns provide the better shave. I will say the Phillips OneBlade is a great trimmer/supplemental electric razor.

I have one of the old Philips ones. I don't think I ever used the packets because they didn't really do much. I think just a splash of Electric Shave is probably the better.


I wish, however, that I could find an electric razor with the old beard trimmer in it. My very first electric one had it and it was super useful when you let your whiskers get too long and needed to shave.

Braun Series 7.

I've had mine for about 6 years and haven't had a problem yet (I use the cleaning base weekly and open it up once/twice a year to fully clean it). I haven't even changed the foil head yet and it still shaves perfectly fine.

This style Braun was the best subsequent series/models are poor in comparison.

I used to get such bad razor burn from those disposable blades.

A few years ago I spent $250 on a straight blade, strop, brush and soap. Haven’t spent a cent since, and haven’t had razor burn since.

I also have a series 9 I got it to replace my old one (almost the same as the Ebay link) which I prefer it shaves nearly as close with a new foil/cutter and I like the ergonomics better especially the trimmer. I got the 9 because the trimmer on the old one is worn out.

I have a Braun Series 7 and love it. I tried a number of different razors and had bad sensitivity issues, and this does everything I need with no irritation. I can just start using it - no need to warm up my face, apply creams/soaps or whatever. It won't be as close as some of the more intense razors out there, but it does a great job in my opinion.

I was like you too, I hated shaving and found that electric worked well, but I didn’t like what it was doing to my skin and hair, and it’s expensive to replenish the cleaning solution.

A few years ago I grew my first beard and learned how to treat my beard and started learning about how I should be shaving.

I picked up a safety razor and shave soap with a brush and I haven’t looked back since.

I highly recommend it over electric.

I personally don't use an electric, but I used to, so I was just trying to provide some ideas.


I'm an old-school wet shave guy. I alternate between my Shavette straight handle and my Merkur Progress adjustable handle; both with Feather blades. For traveling, I have Dollar Shave Club.
