They both got into construction adhesive left in the yard by a tradesperson a month ago. The one got off fairly lucky while the other needed multiple surgeries and had to have me rush her back 3 different times. My wife and I are thrilled to have them both back to 100% and just being themselves!!!

Friends all made fun of me for paying $200 a month for our 2 dogs on a 90% coverage plan. I figured that the known hip and elbow problems would have the insurance pay for itself in a number of years when they were older but didn't expect to have a vet bill creep towards 10k as the ingested something they shouldn't have. The vet knocked over $2,000 off which was nice of them but with insurance wasn't a big deal. Needless to say, the pet insurance has already paid for itself for the next few years and I expect to need it again around that time.
I shopped the big ones and went with the best coverage / less questions sort of policy but it also takes over a month to get paid back. You could go for a slightly higher cost policy (at least was the case in our situation) but have direct billing which would be nice.
Some say to put $100 in a jar each month and use it if needed and if not needed, take a vacation and while I am sure this works in theory, I am not sure how many put it away and even if you do, a situation like ours would backfire on you.

Nothing but good things to say about pet insurance.
Our friends didn't have it and their dog got cancer, they spent over $15k at least out of pocket.
We got our puppy around the same time they were going through that and they heavily encouraged us to get it. We did, and it's been about $50/month and well worth it. Luckily we haven't had to use it but one time and it was in the 30 day free trial window, but thankfully nothing since then (knock on wood).
I can't emphasize enough how important it is. It can get really expensive really fast without it.

Sorry to hear about Charlie's prognosis. Enjoy the time you have left with him. I know a lot of owners can't handle being in the room when they are put down but if you can handle that it's much more comforting for your dog in his last moments if you are present with him.

Truth. The only dog I will ever own was put down 21 years ago. I still haven't forgiven myself for not being there with her at the end.

We have never lost a dog due to old age.....always effin cancer and before their time.
NinePack.....based on the photos, looks like you gave Charlie a hell of a life. You're the right type of dog owner.

I'm very sorry to hear that. Dogs just don't live long enough.
As others have mentioned it's important to be there with your dog at the end. Someone advised me in the past to pay before you take the dog in the back. That way you can just leave after.
I hope it doesn't sound cold but I've been through it twice already and it does help.
