I have never heard a coach praise himself so much like Hitchcock did in his interview today. Perfect fit.

Well out of that whole front office McLellan was probably the most qualified to do his job so it's fitting that they chose to jettison him rather than the real problem which is Chiapet.

This is pretty much a death sentence for Chia. Nobody fires a GM mid-season. So what they've done is replace McLellan but hire a guy who will only finish the season so the new GM can pick his own man.

Stauffer was on PrimeTime Sports tonight.

Wow!!

“Hitchcock was mentored by Claire Drake... blah blah blah blah...”

Every chance that blowhard has to talk about the University of Alberta Hockey Program he goes after it like his first Big Mac.

In Edmonton I think they actually believe Claire Drake invented hockey.

“He was teaching pressure on the penalty kill in the 60’s before the NHL!!!”

For crying out loud! Just. Shut. Up!!

Claire Drake was a coach, sure he contributed to the game but it’s not like he was Scotty Bowman.

I have no doubt Stauffer would argue he was better than Bowman.

Some hilarity on Sportsnet just now..

Principe and Spector discussing Hitchcock and why he'll be a better coach, and the first thing they bring up is McDavid. How is Hitchcock going to deal with McDavid? And can they find a way to work well together?

Once done talking about McDavid, and McDavid, Spector then goes on a tear discussing how Hitchcock is a TEAM guy, "it's all about the TEAM", "he's gonna get them playing like a TEAM".

Oh, and McDavid!

Agree with with Lowe but MacT probably doesn’t deserve that same blame. Its funny because History kind of repeated itself with MacT and I retrospect he clearly wasn’t the problem both times he was fired.

He was fired as coach of a flawed roster (but was over .500 in each of his last two seasons) but then everyone they brought in after him had a much worse record - including the well regarded Pat Quinn.

Then they brought him back as GM in 2013 after they already had a flawed roster and failed with the Yakupov pick. Then again he was scapegoated and the brought in Nicholson and Chiarelli to turn it around - only for things to get worse.

His GM moves were uninspiring but Draisaitl and Nurse (his only two firsts) seem to be okay and he didn’t make any real bone headed trades.

If anything MacT should probably be trying to get away from that tire fire because he’s the only one who hasn’t been a complete screw up over there.

That's kinda messed up.

McLellan was clearly the best coach the Oilers have had in nearly 10 years, yet he's the one to get the boot.

Chiarelli should have been the one to go if anything. I'm glad they messed this one up.

Craig McTavish 301-252-47-56 - was to be let go as his option wasn’t renewed before end of 2006 regular season, went on Cup run, Lowe had to renew him. Turned into Lowe’s public face to take abuse after he finally did get let go.

Pat Quinn 27-47-8 - Hired along with Renney, where plan was them both coach and after 3 years or so, Renney take over. Lowe must have had other incentives to for Quinn and Renney to think this was going to work. Quinn lasted only one year.

Tom Renney 57-85-22 - See above. Lasted 2 more years. Here’s what he said a few years after. "I’ve already lost a job because of my values. In Edmonton, I was asked to play young players more who had recently undergone operations. I reduced their ice time ", he says. "But they had to play because they were very good and we were selling hope. But I acted according to my conscience." https://www.coppernblue.com/2014/10/...ome-dirt-in-it

Ralph Krueger 19-22-7 - Renney assistant, fired while worked for the Oilers scouting in the offseason in Europe via Skype because Lowe woke up one morning and heard the eastern press raving about Dallas Eakins and how he was an outside the box thinker and the Canucks were going to hire him as an associate.

Dallas Eakins 36-63-14 - came from the AHL, wasnt ready for the NHL as a head coach, got hired by Lowe as an NHL head coach. Water sprayed on him, swarm defense, odd practices...just out of his element , but hired because Lowe wants to upstage someone else and show the league and press how innovative and aggressive he was as a leader, trying so hard to be the next Glen Sather, it hurts, even to this day.

Todd Nelson 17-25-9 - Famous for Lowe making McTavish hang out on the bench with Nelson for 10 games like some newly minted intern ESL teacher in Korea. Embarrassing and emasculating for both as professionals and as men.

Todd McLellan 78-69-17 - Like so many players wooed by over the years (Pronger, Cole, Souray, Perron etc) by Lowe, who got sold and lied to about the situation, McLellan likely figured that with Lowe back in the shadows with Chia and Nicholson, the Oilers couldn’t be same as they were under Lowe. But as soon as he hit the ice and saw how mentslly fragile the once strong junior and NHL careers these players were and once had, it was clear that the effects reached far and wide. He got the most out of thr group, but as soon as the goodwil from a playoff run wore off, Lowe got back into the owners ear and picked up where he left off, meddling with layers, trying to tell coaches and hockey staff what to do. Hiring guys like Coffey to be coaches, with no coaching experience. I’m sure McLellan thought he was gone in the offseason last year. It took Lowe and one of his good ideas and the right guy available to make the change. Getting embarrassed by the Flames, an organization he hates more then most, then Vegas, and having national press opine on McDavid being wasted, he starts part one of the plan as soon as he can find Nicholson. Chia is gone when they don’t make the playoffs, soon after the trade deadline, and the flavour of the day who can get hoodwinked by Lowe and carry out his orders going forward, will be the new GM for the lottery pick.

Good times.

they'll be no good forever because the owner is essentially a toy collector.
Do not say this ever again.

You know perfectly well that they have meaningless 2019 & 2020 1st round picks that they should most definitely use to acquire a scoring winger & a #1 defenceman.

By scoring winger of course, I mean a winger who scores when slotted properly on a team with a semblance of knowing how to manage a player & not rush them back from injury or ask them to do more than they are capable.

By #1 defenceman of course I mean a #3 or #4 on a good team, probably a number 5 on a contender. But the asset will a #1 none the less... because the player acquired will be a dman who plays the most minutes on your roster because he’s a #1 don’t ya know. .

They’ll figure out a good deal to aquire for those assets.

It’s not if, it’s how many assets they acquire .

Annnd if Petey C. has any problems well, he has an ace up his sleeve.

All he has to do is make a phone call to a certain individual working within the organization who is believed (by himself) to have the second most Stanley Cups working in the game today.

This individual also just so happens to know a thing or two about winning... if there are any questions.
