Say what you want about McLellan but Gretzky or Gulutzan would be massive downgrades. Sure there would be a short term boost but as you said it will be short lived.
I agree. I think McLellan is the best coach in the organization, between him, Gulutzan, MacT, Gretzky, Coffey?, Messier? Anybody else I'm missing?
That just adds to the beauty of the situation - they will can the best coach in the group, then replace him with someone internal (to save Katzkash) who isn't as good.
TSN Radio in Toronto just referred to the Oilers as a "never ending circus," and they now are debating how long it might be until McDavid requests a trade.

Welcome to what most of us have know for the past decade.
What gave it away? The fourth 1st overall pick? Or the fact that they had four #1 picks?

Lowe is probably fuming that anyone would compare the Oilers to something that only has three rings.

Watch, at the end of the season Hitchcock will retire again, "For realsies this time" (word for word) and then proclaim Glen Gulutzan to be the next coach of the Edmonton Oilers due to him being a real "hard worker" and a "smart, nice guy", having sat down numerous times to have cold ones together.

Except how can they really measure the quality of a man without a Grouse Grind!

I’ve heard so many analysts on sportsnet, TSN, etc. just ripping into the oilers today... as they should... but what’s funny is how personally they are taking it. They sound legitimately mad about it. I think it’s because most of the hockey media were so quick to crown the oilers as the next dynasty the moment that they won that lottery draft - no, not that one... no, not that one either... not that one... the next one - that they are taking it as a personal offence because their predictions were so wrong and it has made them all look stupid.
We all remember the comments of “not if but when and how many”. Those predictions look so ridiculous now. Most of us on this board knew how ridiculous those assumptions were the moment they were made so we get to laugh at it now. Those in the sports media that have loved nothing more than to talk about McDavid relentlessly since he was drafted also wanted him to be winning games. They’re mad at the oilers for not living up to the hype they gave them.
These guys should all be playing clips of themselves saying how good they thought the oilers would be by now and how many cups they were certain they would get. Then they can go on their rants. Most of us on CP can skip right to laughing at the oilers with the satisfaction of knowing we were right.

They should make new episodes showing their updated futility in the McDavid era and call it "New Paint Job: Covering up the Rust after the Honeymoon ends"

Mm, truth. How many times have the Oilers been publicly crowned the league's next sweethearts?
The media (big talking heads at least) are dumb and way too quick to spout off about who will be great and who won't. And it's usually based on nothing but hype due to name recognition.
They need to be wrong more often. Which is why Toronto needs to crash and burn in the first round.
