Todd McLellan: I think things went pretty well.

Hoping Hitch will get them playing well enough to just miss the playoffs and a decent shot at Hughes.

The only guy sadder than Glen Gulutzan right now is Ty Rattie, who didn't exactly flourish under Hitchcock in St. Louis.

Todd: WTF? What does this mean, it just says "Your home now, Run Free"

Chia: Its the least we could do, return you to where you came from.

Todd: I'm from Melville! Wait.... your FIRING me?!? Nevermind, Ill find my own ride. Thanks Pete! Just don't screw this up by sending the cheques to San Jose. Do you guys do EFT?

Interesting hire. Will he be able to change the culture of the team and get them to play reliable defence game in and game out? I always thought Hitchcock was one of the better tacticians around, and thought he simply just started getting tuned-out in St. Louis. He was pretty good in St. Louis for most of his tenure there, and they were always difficult to play against.

Then he goes to Dallas for a season, missing the playoffs, but ending up with a +10 at the end of the season. I start worrying that Hitchcock might be exactly the type of coach that team needs.

Then I look at the roster, and look at management, and breathe a long sigh of relief. Not even Ken Hitchcock can save the Edmonton Oilers. Especially an often retired coach who I bet will resemble the semi-retired Mike Keenan in Calgary.

Thank goodness they retained Chiapet.

I think McDavid wants to win bad enough he'll give Hitchcock's methods a shot.

I wouldn't hold my breath on Draisaital though

Why Hitchcock is the perfect hire for the Oilers right now
https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...ers-right-now/

Ken Hitchcock is the perfect candidate for this particular hire by the Edmonton Oilers. Here's why.
Wow. I don't even want to read the article.

The hiring of Hitchcock is being panned even out here in Canucksland (ugh) for many of the same reasons given in this thread. Spector is out of touch here.

No chance Hitchcock is back as head coach next season for the Oilers. He will walk and officially retire.

Quick skim of the first page of HFOilers thread on this hiring:

3 posters said they'd rather have GG take over than hiring Hitchcock.

I'd rather they gave it to GG. This smells like Pat Quinn all over again.

Nooooo. Wrong move FFS. No more dinosaurs. I'd rather have GG take over, I'd rather keep McLellan in charge.

.

He's a short term coach and the players know it, he's not changing the culture of anything in that locker room. The players know that at the end of the year, they go golfing and he goes home forever.

I can't think of a more horrible idea for a team with no identity and a poor skill/work rate.

Whoever thought this was a good idea should be . . . oh right Lowe and Chia.

Am I the only one slightly relieved that it wasn't Darryl Sutter? I didn't want to have to start hating him, and if there is a coach available right now that can get a bunch of scrubs to play as a team, it is him.

Probably wanted to fly him to San Jose so he won't be seen taking celebration shots while tailgating at the Grey Cup.

While true, at the same time its not as though the Oilers have trouble playing as a team.

They do play as a team, just a really, really bad one.

You can train animals to work as a team but if they all suck relative to their competition its still not going to do much good.

Spector would have literally written the same article about any coach that was hired. The guy is an Oilers mouthpiece...

"Why __________ is the perfect coach for the Oilers now"
