What ever money the province and feds committed to preparing the bid package should be kept by the city. Bidco spent a pile of money and the city spent a bunch on the plebiscite so if those funds for allocated to bid preparation costs Calgary incurred bid preparation costs.

I don't think that is the issue... I think it is about the money that was not spent. I believe for example the last update about the vote was that it was running under budget, so there could be some money left over.

Honestly I dont see how you can justify spending a cent on Olympic facilities when you said no to the olympics and the stimulas money they would have brought.

Im mad about it but let them rot.

Edit: Cant have your cake and eat it too.

It doesn't sound like the remaining 2 candidate cities (Stockholm and Milan) are all in either at this point. Both seem to have issues with funding and logistics.

Nobody seems to want the games that badly. Even after the Olympic committee relaxed their rules about geographic restrictions, they seem to be having trouble getting governments to buy in.

Calgary may have had an advantage since the last games will have been in Asia and Europe. I am not a big fan of hosting expensive vanity projects, but I would bet that Calgary would have won the bid if it went through.

The IOC is in a bind here because of their corruption. Since the beginning of time cities hosted and got new infrastructure. This goes for not only Olympics but other world events like World Cup, Pan Am Games, Commonwealth Games and EXPO (people forget that if Calgary had gotten EXPO 2005, we'd have the ring road already). These events are an opportunity for innovation. The host cities get to show off new infrastructure, technology, security etc....

But then the IOC and FIFA went to authoritarian or poor countries to try to showcase them. The White Elephant became a problem? Why? Money became a problem? Why?

So the IOC now wants the Olympics where no new infrastructure is built. Who wants that? The summer games are still big and for at least in the foreseeable future, cities will still want it. But nobody watches the winter games outside of maybe 20 countries. There is no advertising dollars and no tv revenue. And what little there is goes to the IOC leaving the host cities holding the bill.

I also believe the IOC is in a bind for 2026, because I do believe the IOC wanted Calgary from the beginning.. it would keep some other countries from moving forward. It sounds like 2030 has a much more interest.

So here's a question- what happens if the IOC comes back and offers significantly more money for Calgary to host? Especially for many of you who voted no- would that change your mind at all?

The exact same bid just with more money coming from the IOC? I would consider it depending on how much more they offered.

Ideally for me they would rework the bid slighty. Include a new rink, lock down curling in Calgary, be more clear about who is on the hook for overruns. It wasn't just about how much money the IOC was kicking in.

Yes. I've thought all along that they need us more than we need them. Play hardball with the IOC.

Will Sweden and Italy wait each other out? I definitely would want to be the last bid standing to suck more out of the IOC.

How much money did they offer the first go around? Because from I have heard they don't offer much cash but "goods and services" in the form of consulting and such.

I say if a country wants to send athletes to the Olympics they contribute to the hosting of the games. And all countries share the revenues of the TV deals. Cut the IOC out completely.

I think it was something like $925m USD that the IOC committed to Calgary for 2026 hosting. That's $1.223 Billion in CAD.

This is why the City should not have officially killed the bid. They could have suspended it but leave the door open in case the IOC came back with a very much sweetened offer that would actually make sense.

I'm sure the poor countries will appreciate that. making it even more of an elitist games. if Calgary wants a new arena and a ring road, why should places like East Timor, Mongolia or Kovoso pay for it?

or on another note, if Russia wants to spend 50 billion for an Olympics, why should Canada pay a share of that inflated cost?

but that wasn't money they were giving. it was in the form of "goods and services" that could mean a whole lot of things, many of them not good for Calgary.

I'm pretty sure they voted to 'suspend' the bid?

Having said that it's a moot point since the Province funding was tied to the plebiscite.
