Rittich postgame: "They just had one breakaway, it's not a big deal"

Great game! Was definitely one of my favourite games that I have attended.

I do think Hathaway and Dube need to sit out a few games. That fourth line needs some energy and hathaway brings none.

Rittich is just so likeable.

I really thought Ortio was going to be it. So I’m going to continue holding judgement for a while. Rittich flat out struggled last season for many games in a row, so I keep reminding myself of that to come back down to earth.

So how big of a sample size do we need before we declare Rittich our true #1? I'm thinking if he continues to play well over his next 4 or 5 starts, that should firmly solidify it.

Ortio probably wasn't as consistent as Rittich, but I still think it's a shame we let him go. In the last 17 games of his NHL career he posted a 2.52 GAA and .910 SV% and had some improved puck handling, and many of those games were with guys like Jokipakka and Wotherspoon logging minutes in front of him. He looked trending upwards.

Just got home from the game.

Suuuuuuuuper boring. The first was great, second was meh, and third = zzzzzzz.

I mean... great win... but... c'mon. I was hoping for 10.

Disappointed.

Can't remember where I got it from, perhaps one of the Daily Flames Roundtables on F960 - but it was mentioned when Smith went down last year and Rittich found himself thrust into the role, he definitely didn't smile as much and joke around like he normally did.

But now that he's gotten a chance to reflect on that experience I feel good about his prospects. He's in his physical prime, not in the twilight of his career, and appears to be in very high spirits right now. And he appears to have gotten over the burden of playing at home at this point.

i think people make too much out of last year honestly.

Kid had never been to North America before Calgary signed him, spoke almost no english and was playing on a different ice surface.

Sure he struggled last year. Name one goalie who didn't struggle his first year in the league... are there some? sure, but i'd bet its just a handful and none went through the kind of transition Rittich has.

I don't know if he's the guy, but at this point, the Flames need to play him more to see what he can be.

That includes starting the next game. Win and you stay in is how Peters needs to manage his goalie rotation

He just needs to keep playing the way he's playing right now. He does that, Peters will give him the starts. I want Smith to still be pushing him to keep the job. If in doing so Smith finds his game we're laughing.

yeah i mentioned this in the game thread but the extra ice time didn't look that good on hathaway. he is pretty much guaranteed to make a mess of things whenever he has the puck. turns possession into scramble situations far too often, hasn't been noticeably physical, and kills plays. czarnik is a much better option at this point. about the only nitpick with that game. everyone played up to their abilities, an encouraging team effort for sure.

here's hoping they can start the next game with as much intensity as they started this one

I agree. Feels like the top 3 lines are really solidifying now.

Thought 3rd line forechecked much like the 3rd period against Oilers.
