Interesting choice to leave out Rickets.

2016/17 - very good first season in the AHL

2018/19 - looks great so far
This isn't like Kipper who was an AHL all-star for two seasons before struggling to make his mark in the NHL.
We obviously need to see how Rittich can handle an increased workload and who knows, maybe we catch lightning in a bottle. But on paper, this is not a guy who has progressed at every level and shown he is ready to be a starter. And I suspect that's part of the reason Smith has still been getting starter's minutes.
I don't know how Rittich looks in practice and I do think that's an understated part of the equation. I recall one Flame player after one of his wins comment on how good he is in practice.
As stated previously if we can get average goaltending then should be OK. Bu average is no gimme for anyone.

Heres the crazy thing: At the moment we dont need that.
We dont need a superstar goalie. We really dont. It would be awesome and a game-changer, but its not what we're really after at the moment.
At the moment what we really need is an NHL-Average Goalie. Someone who posts .910 save percentage.
League worst right now (31st in the NHL) is .905
And Smith is well, well below that.
Rittich doesnt have to come in and be Kiprusoff, he just has to make the saves an NHL goaltender is expected to make.

Last year the Flames were much worse in front of him though. Hanifin and the rookies are an upgrade, and Brodie is much better. The team D is better (Lindholm v. Ferland, the fourth line, etc). And I'm not seeing the mistakes he made even as a backup. He's taken a big step IMO (and I was always a GIllies leaner versus Rittich).

Put a bunch of cats into a Mike Smith shaped goalie uniform. And then smear all the pucks with fish.

Haha — I missed the early fireworks. I’m pretty sure James Neal would have “Nurse’d” Smith in the locker room had he gotten the start.

Thank you for adding that Rittich will start tomorrow in the title. That fact made reading the first few pages hilarious.

Agree that was a bad team in front of him, or team playing poorly. But I don't like to give anyone a pass. His combined stats from AHL and NHL last year were not good enough.
He has looked very good in his games this year. No debating it.
I am just more in the camp of hoping he we will be an effective starter vs. expecting it.

This seemingly gets forgotten in the whole Smith debacle..
It disappoints me but I can understand it to a certain extent.
He seems kinda like Cervenka in that I feel like he could really produce offensively at the NHL level but something is missing that the coach doesn't seem to like.

Dube for Czarnik is a bit of an upgrade IMO. I still think Dube goes to the net better - Czarnik plays more of a perimeter game (given his size that's understandable). I think Dube may have an advantage defensively as well.
