Not even the dumbest coach would start Smith on Saturday after what just happened.

I mentioned this after San Jose, Peters is mind boggling to keep playing Smith, Derek Ryan, and his choices for the 2nd unit powerplay.
I know the goaltending from Smith is pure unadulterated horse####, but questionable decisions abound and if Peters is responsible for all 3, it's disturbing.
Treliving has faith in Peters and a history/love affair with Smith.
What an organization...brutal!

Some might say you’re being dramatic but I have to agree. If he’s in near tears postgame it’s because everyone in the room knows this isn’t a slump. He’s done as a starting goalie in the NHL and it’s only a matter of time until he’s out of the league entirely.

Just got back from the game and I am so glad to see the header for this thread blames Mike Smith. The entire team in front of him deserved better goaltending.
What does this guy need to secure a W. The Flames to put up 60 shots and have possession for all 60 minutes.
Mike Smith is becoming a goalie that totally sucks for 5 games and plays great for 1.
In no way should Peter's have Smith in net against Edmonton.
After this game Mike Smith should be relegated to back up.

For the people bringing up Elliott, get a grip, Elliott was never, ever close to being as bad as Smith

I would also be ok if derek Ryan became allergic to hockey pucks or ice or whatever too but I think injury retirement is only for players who were good at some time.

The playoff series was unforgivable but Elliott was always at least decent in the regular season.

Scoring Winger

Unbelievable that posters are still blaming it on the team for not scoring enough goals. So we need the team to score 4+ goals to win a game?
How about having a goaltender that doesn't let in a couple of softies every game. The Flames have won many games despite of Mike Smith, and should have won in Anaheim and tonight if not for him.
This game is 100% on Mike Smith and not on the players. The Flames players dominated the Habs the whole game and all of it is for nothing because of an abysmal performance by their goaltender.
Nothing personal, I am sure Mike Smith is a great guy, but I do not want to see him play another game as a Flame. Rittich from now on and pick someone up from free agency (or potentially trade for Bobrovsky).

With that said about Sutter not playing Turek at home the rest of the 2004 season, not sure you can do thst with Smith... somewhere it was mentioned last year that Rittich is nervous or doesn’t like home games, so GG played him mostly on the road. The stats bear that out:
Last year, 2 starts out of his overall 16, 0-2-1 with .855 save percentage at home.
This year, 2 games played and a .800 save percentage at home.

If Smith starts against the Oilers it's probably shows that it's the sink or swim moment for Smith. To put Smith in such a position where the outcome may possibly be for him to be run out of his own barn would be the ultimate test from Peters, and if Smith lets softies in and loses us the game you'd have to belive he's done.

I havent been this angry in a while after a Flames loss.. last time it was probably the Vegas game last season.
At least take these games to friggen OT before ####ting the bed. So many lost points.. I cant wait til treliving is gone, just has absolutely #### the bed every year on goaltending.

No, that game was tonight. No more rope, he's already been given more than he deserves.

He had some huge slumps in the regular season, and went on some huge tears. Don't you remember his bad start the first season, and the Chad came in and won a bunch in a row? And then Elliott went on his own? There were a couple real bad streaks like that.

An observation and a conclusion
The radio group are open about smith losing the game, but they aren't happy saying it.
I suspect Smith is really popular off the ice as a "professional" and well respected by the media. I think they know this is the end and are sad to see him struggle.

I think Derek Ryan has been good so far this season. I don’t understand why people are so down on him.
