It would seem paradoxical that people voted No because they wanted more lavish and high-quality facilities (no Value Village Olympics) without having spiraling costs.
|
The Olympic venues (not McMahon) have been continually upgraded with provincial dollars. This will continue well into the future and does not need an Olympics to facilitate. The Oval, the Nordic Center, the sliding Center, and winsport have all had millions of Provincial dollars spent on them in the past 10 years (links to sources are in my previous posts in this thread)
Yes this would have been an easy way to get capital for them but having these facilities compete with libraries and rec centers for dollars is the correct approach.

Both sides could have used more time to actually think about the facts and the communication behind it. It still angers me to know that people voted No based on thinking hockey would be in Edmonton; just makes me cynical that people don't check for themselves, but that's democracy for you. Hell, that's basically politics every election - vote for the shirt color rather than the platform.

Interesting to see the ward breakdown and the skew towards No for the Advanced Poles. That surprised me.

Kind of bugs me that people voted yes without knowing how much Whistler was going to want. Or where some other events were taking place. Or how much housing we were actually going to build. Or if magic insurance exists.Or that a yes vote means a 10-1 roi. But I get what you're saying. It is annoying when people vote with bad info.

Ward 7 did a bit of a switch from the advance polling. Wonder if that’s just the tendency of people who wanted to vote early, or if people had a change of heart.

You're making fun and I get it, but the point remains. Both sides could have used with more time and clarity.

This “no” vote marks the beginning of the erosion of the Olympic legacy that bolstered the Canadian winter Olympic teams to the top of the medal standings the last few Games.
Our medal count will diminish moving forward as facilities continue to deteriorate and disappear, along with the Olympic spirit and dreams athletes once gleaned from Canadian-held Games.
Some young voters simply couldn’t understand the impact hosting the Games can have on the lives of everyone in a city, as volunteers, spectators, business owners or simply proud Canadians.
It’s transformative, motivating, inspiring and impossible to put a dollar figure on. What happened late Tuesday night was a terrible loss for this city – something it has been racking up of late.
This city’s outlook could have changed, things could have been better.

And then Canada will end as a country and North America will be a wasteland forever. Bleh

Absolutely. I think we were trending towards a yes. But there are just too many holes in the story that would have to be filled with City of Calgary money only.

Apparently the Yes side was expecting the advanced polls to be very slanted towards No. Like many people have already said, the numbers are a lot closer if you remove the advance votes.

How could the Olympics have changed empty offices and unbuilt pipelines?
Even the amount of jobs created would have been minimal vs building new infrastructure.
Weird take.

Why would you remove advance votes?
There was nothing close about this....which is surprising in and of itself IMO.

Just a hypothetical scenario, I'm not suggesting the advanced votes are any less important then the ones cast on the actual day.
I wonder what the numbers would have been like if the vote was after the City released their budget proposal for the next 4 years.

We make deals like 50 other North American cities without Olympics do. It's what we elect councillors for.

With who? We're having a hard enough time getting an arena funded and doing it without too much public money in a time that Calgarians think we shouldn't be spending money on frivolous things, you think the City is going to have CSEC fund a new CFL stadium too? And where is Calgary going to get said money?
It's odd to say you don't want the Olympics but think the City has funds to slap together deals with CSEC for new stadiums and arenas and maintain all the facilities on the docket the Olympics would have covered. Perhaps that can happen spread out over multiple years, but it's no insignificant number.
The new Flames arena will happen because people want it and want it now, but you have to explain to me how McMahon will come to fruition. I am sure both sides would love to know.
