I'm very annoyed the city has lost out on what I deem a great opportunity for infrastructure spending and growing community spirit.

Nothing wrong with that and well within your right, I would too if I was a yes voter myself. That said an awful lot of rather off the deep end rants since last night, some would have you believe the city is 2 years away from becoming Detroit because the bid was voted down.

I don't think either result would spell the end of Calgary but I do find it interesting that some yes people think the no side fell victim to fear mongering, all while starting a countdown to when Calgary turns into the thunder dome thanks to the no vote

Unfortunate result, as I would have liked to attend some Olympic events, but this is democracy in action. The majority has spoken. Hard to find fault with the process.

Ok maybe not Detroit, but why not Buffalo.

Naturally. It's a topic many Calgarians are invested in.

It would be foolhardy and hypocritical to think the No side wouldn't react the same way if the Yes vote won.

Of course, there are always a very vocal minority on either side that scream doom and gloom when they don't get their way while the vast majority take it in stride. Would be no different if the results were flipped, just different people predicting the end times.

The same way? Almost certainly not. Lest we forget the No side lost nothing even if Yes won the plebiscite. Hell the No side had several more chances for this to not happen. There'd be complaining, sure, but not like the Yes side who actually lost something last night and immediately jumped to "Calgary is a dying town/lacking in ambition/Detroit 2.0"

For sure there would be people from the no side complaining but I don’t think quite as much.

There are a lot of us who aren’t against the idea of hosting but this bid for whatever reason to each individual just didn’t “check enough boxes” so to speak.

Especially with such a great turnout, always nice to see at least that side of democracy in action.

Did I hear nenshi say the next step is to vote to "suspend" the vote? Which would mean they are leaving it open in case something changes between now and the January bid submission deadline. Ex. IOC last ditch effort or...

My sister worked the plebiscite and that is exactly what she said.

Older people trickled in early in small numbers but after 4, it was mainly the young crowd in big numbers, Their station had a few hundred early on and over 3000 once 4:00 rolled around.

Wanna hear something really hilarious? A multi-million dollar campaign with virtually every major endorsement and an existing GOTV infrastructure got it's ass handed to it by a campaign run with virtually no money and no organization. Knee slapper really.

Yes. You got me. I just wanted to watch the yes side voters on an anonymous hockey forum meltdown. That was my only motivator. I really wanted the Olympics but the temptation of reading strangers negative reactions was too great for me to resist.

You’re right... hahaha so... soooo... funny to watch a fear based campaign exploit a campaign handcuffed by coordinating and communicating a hyper complex project full of projections from three levels of government without stepping on toes or stepping out of line, two weeks before it was voted on.

Hilarious really.

I love seeing the power of fear mongering. Bright future ahead for all of us in our collective tribes while we fight about everything and agree on nothing.

Solid comedy.

For the no voters reveling in the saltiness of the yes side, I would suggest that the yes side frustration is a culmination of many things, and not just saying no to the Olympics. Its been a death of 1000 cuts in this city. Whether its an arena, a pipeline, flood mitigation, or the olympics, there is just no political leadership to get things accomplished. So I am not going to play the Detroit 2.0 card, but as a life long Calgarian I can tell you my civic pride is at an all time low and I am pretty sure I am not alone.
