For some reason as soon as I started reading Wee Willy Nylander it was in Grounds keeper Willy's voice.

In fact, if Dubas was smart - and all indications are that he is - he would wait until the eleventh hour and say "here's the only trade we can make, but you have to agree to terms. Alternatively, this is our final offer. Pick your poison."

Like Burke did with Kessel it could be a threat of an offer sheet that has Dubas do the scrambling, if an eleventh hour hits I can see an offer sheet before a trade. anything below $8,118,641 is only a first-, second-, and third-round pick. there's 13 teams that could fit him under the cap without a trade. (not sure which ones have the picks)

Leafs match any offer there.

Cox is like a dumber, more troll-like Francis. Francis actually makes sense occasionally. Cox is just a complete and utter moron.

Leafs can match but that's the number they're trying to avoid. So if one of their rivals were to do it, it could hurt the Leafs down the road.
So make the offer. Leafs don't match, you get a very good player. Leafs do match, you've hurt their cap situation.

I could totally see some team like NYI make such an offer. And it makes it super hard for the Leafs to get value back if they want to deal him with such a contract. It would really screw over the Leafs in the future if they matched. Interesting.

What? Leafs are not matching $8,118,641. They take the first-second-third-round picks.

Actually if they match an offer they can't trade him for one calendar year.
I get offer sheets don't happen much but this is when they need to. Screw over the rival, and if they match, they certainly can't afford to do the same thing back.

Some of you obviously don't understand how the offer sheet works. Here is the key part for you not following along at home:
The AAV for an offer sheet, which determines the compensation required, is derived by dividing the total contract value amount by the lesser of:
number of years offered, or
five (5) years
So if you offer him 8.1 that's going to cost you 4 first round picks. I kinda think Dubas might be okay with that...

And then you pay top dollar without buying any UFA years. That sounds like something Ed would do. That said, it could very well work as the fact that you don't get those "extra" years would also turn off the Leafs.

Not saying I would do it, just saying you could offer 8.1M per for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Group Compensation.
