I think this is more of a case of Smith finally having a good start, and not wanting him to wait 6 days to see if he can follow it up.

Bad enough both goaltenders had to wait multiple days after good starts as it is (Rittich 5 if he started tomorrow, Smith 4 if he starts tomorrow)

Starting Smith is like giving the opposition a 2-0 lead before puck drop. I don't see good things happening tomorrow.

And watch for Paul Byron score on the breakaway on Smith.

If that happens we should probably blame the players in front of him for letting Byron walk in no?

We should have ourselves an old fashioned hanging of Treliving for putting him on waivers

Just about everyone agreed that smith play at least adequately last game. Peters probably is hoping that, with four days off, but no games on the bench, Smith can carry that play over and finally get going. I do wish the chronicles of Rittich would start getting more playing time, though.

Smith played a good game against the Sharks. Rittich lost against the Habs last time we played them, so I am fine with Smith playing again.

Tomorrow’s game really proves whether last game Smith started was an anomaly or not. Had a really rough start, hopefully he’s turning it around. If he doesn’t, don’t think Peters will have any problem giving Rittich the next 3 home games.

So let me see if I have this straight now...

If Smith plays badly, we need to give him a shot to redeem himself so his confidence isn't shot.

If Smith plays better, have to start him again to see if we can get him on a roll.

Rittich plays lights out, gets a shutout and goes at least two games without another start but we needn't worry about how that affects his confidence, accountability etc. Lots of guys here would rather take a flyer on another supposed #1 who is not currently a #1 rather than give Rittich a shot.

If Rittich finally gets the reigns, we don't have to be concerned that the team never showed confidence in him until there was no other choice. If he doesn't continue his current play once made a starter, that just proves he isn't a starter.

Thank God the Flames didn't operate this way when Kipper came aboard. They would have missed the playoffs in 03/04.

Keep these lines together for more than 1 game:

13-23-28
93-11-19
18-77-27

Interesting comparison. Kipper didn't even get here until November 16, so using that timeline, this is Smith's last chance before it goes to Rittich with no looking back!

Fact stolen from r/calgaryflames:

Quote:
In each of the past 4 seasons James Neal has had an 18 game stretch where he scored 3 goals or less. His lowest goal total among those seasons was 23.

Is it that hard to type the actual names? I feel like I'm doing my kids name-matching homework when I read these posts. Old guy problem.

It's worse when people share other teams lines like we should just know every jersey number in the league

The starter (Turek) was hurt though.

They didn't have the option of testing the new guy while keeping the number one sharp.

Rittich did a face plant last year as the number one, he may do that again. Until proven otherwise Smith is the most likely bet to be the team's most dependable path to adequate goaltending based on his career and history.

If he continues to sputter though, I think you'll see Rittich get more and more rope to see if he hangs himself. If he doesn't a star is born!

I don’t think smith is the best bet.

He has been awful for ~10 calendar months now... to me that points to a trend not a “he can shake it off”

If you look at his full history he hasn’t won in the playoffs since 2012 which is a long time ago. Smith sucks and it’s ridiculous that he has more leash than seemingly any other sub .890 goalie in the league.

Those lines look like they'd have the most offensive potential.

I wonder how much centre Czarnik played for the Providence Bruins last year?
