I wish there was the option to vote No but then request them to possibly come back more prepared in 8 years with actual transparency and a better Bid. We would also have visibility into how our economy is doing and if it has a chance at turning around at all.

This bid was horse #### and if this gets voted down that will be the primary reason. Also not having the Flames arena thing figured out in advance of this is a huge, huge issue and to miss that is so short sighted and borderline idiotic.

Its a illustration of the lousy job done by Bidco and the City in this case. They came out with a Insurance salesman pitch combined with a Nigerian Prince scheme. This result is about a complete lack of faith and trust in the work that was done.

While this is a step back, it allows for the city to do the job right even if that means that its not the 2026 Olympics.
Is it really Bidcos fault when they didn't know what to work with in terms of funding up until the last minute?

I do wish they ran a campaign much heavier on something like that myths sheet they put out. I think this vote is won or lost on the undecided people and it should have been an easy target but instead it feels as if they pushed harder on the people who were already a yes.

i do not believe this has anything to do with what your political leanings are...

wholeheartedly agree with you that this is a good thing.. its a municipal issue. Political tribalism is the bane of democracy imo...

As of 5 PM it was over 207,000...so assuming many more hadnt yet and were stopping on way home from work, i think its safe to say that the 280,000 range was reached.

Got to admit, I’m quite shocked with the results so far. Thought it was going to be much closer. I know it’s not over but going to need a miracle to pull this one out for the YES camp.

They really rushed the plebiscite. From what Moran said on Bunks podcast they knew that the security number in the bid was heavy and that the federal and provincial money were going to come in late. Just optically that was a bad strategy. They needed to have the federal, provincial and city funding side and the cost side finalized before presenting to the public.

They also needed vision and graphics. The McMahon mock up made it look really cool. They needed that for all the venues whether or not they were real or not. When you make the sales pitch it was 3 billion in taxpayer dollars for what?

I hope they seriously look at a 2030 bid with a few more bells and whistles.

Sigh. I expected "No" to prevail, but before checking this thread I briefly imagined the buzz and excitement that would come with the lead up to the games.

So what do these scrutineers do? Stand around and see how people voted when they pass their ballot in or like exit polls?

It makes about a billion times more sense to wait and for a variety of reasons.

Good natured joking aside, I really hope that Calgary (and our City Council) sets a higher standard of disclosure and demands better from such processes in the future, regardless of the vote result.

If the Vote goes "Yes" or if the vote goes "No" and they still continue to look at the bid or have a look back process, I hope Council realizes how ridiculous it was to have such a mess of a budget, miscommunicated plans, obvious false financial claims, insurance that does not exist, even goddamn bots stacking votes on their survey site.

"Yes" or "No", I think we can demand better from our representatives in the government and of our city. I also agree that the process has been divisive, we can do better than this. We can take the time to put together a good, clear researched proposal that at least passes a business sniff test and gets all levels of government on the same page.

We don't need to slap something together and then rush and force people to vote,

I would suspect they verify the read out on the machine, then compare that number with the total number of ballots cast to make sure it matches. Then maybe spotcheck ballots for DRO signatures.

Side story: car parked in middle of road with hazards on and nobody In it... on way to YES party. Then police and ambulance... then we see this man staggering trying to walk a straight line. Very drunk. Just saw officer toss car keys to other officer. Not good. At all.

Of course it is. He’s clearly implying YES voters have been driven to drink by the early results and are now driving hammered to the party to drown their sorrows.

I knew those yes voters were irresponsible but this is too far.

Unfortunately.. all the main stream media was pretty much a no vote.. so they controlled the agenda..

Sad.. but I know I will at least have a little bit of grin.. when this eventually costs us more in the long run.. all the upgrades and improvements eventually have to happen, with no guarantees of other level of government support.

Observe the voting going on and then watch the count. In this case, it would just be looking at the electronic tally and probably hand counting any ballots the machine didn’t like. They can then report the results of their station to campaign HQ for an unofficial tally while counting is happening

But he doesn't say the drunk driver was on the way to the same party. Or does he sorta imply that? I don't know.

But burn the witch!
