Recognizing that that there is a significant difference between the highest and lowest priced tickets, BidCo has estimated average ticket price for the 2026 Games is approximately $230 (2018 prices).

I would wager that low income Calgarians have about 99% better chance of catching an Olympic event here than if the games are hosted in another city.

Also have my official ‘88 souvenir program.

If the yes side wins I suspect they might be worth something during the two weeks of the 2026 games.

I remember the Stephen Ave Mall being lined with pin traders from all over the world and people heading down there to buy or make trades. Traders had pins from previous games from what I can remember but it was the 88 pins that were in most demand, especially the media ones.

Most of mine came from corporate clients I had and any my mother and dad got from their employers. Traded many of them for tickets to events and the ones that I had left were framed along with a print of the games. Still have my Olympic coin set.

There have been comments made about how Hockey Finals tickets are so expensive. The face values start quite high but if you were looking for a Sweden-Russia Finals(Canada started slowly in 2010) you would have got them for a penny on the dollar. I was able to attend the gold medal hockey final in 2010 but there was no guarantee that it would pan out.
If the home team is in the medals those events can become quite pricey. That being said in comparison(premium sports) to other big events like Superbowls and Stanley Cup Playoffs, tickets can be quite reasonable. I have got a lot of last minute bargains at both the summer and winter games(eg. Boxing finals, Moguls finals, figure skating, and some hockey).

There tends to be a glut of tickets to almost every event because results do not pan out for the finals and fans of specific countries dump tickets.

Low income Calgarians aren’t going to pay anywhere near $2000 in additional taxes for this event. That’s for an average family, AND also not considering projects that go ahead if there is no olympics.

In reality, a low income family would see essentially no difference either way.

Programs like kids up front should help for all families. Not sure if those kinds of programs were around for 88, but should be much easier to organize, communicate and distribute in 7 years.

What is the NPV of estimated increase of taxes until my death?
That’s about the right timeframe to focus on here although for sure the later years will get pretty darn cheap in today dollars. Plus by then I’ll be homeless anyway so it won’t matter.
