So Toronto is going to take on Brodie at $4.65M and Frolik at $4.3M but won't just pay Nylander $8M?

Flames need to move out a minimum of 4.5 million to fit in a signed Nylander at 7.5 million to come in under the cap.
Anyone of these deals work, financially.
Dillon Dubé + Travis Hamonic
Sam Bennett + TJ Brodie
James Neal + Rasmus Andersson
Michael Frolík + Juuso Välimäki

Fair points - it would be more like:
Jankowski + Brodie
Jankowski + Hamonic
Czarnik + Brodie
Czarnik + Hamonic
Bennett + Brodie
Bennett + Hamonic
Anyone of those combos could be enough to get it done if what Dreger says is true; add to that the fact that Nylander’s agent is Johnny’s, his dad was Flame/he was born here, lots of Swedish talent on the roster, moves Nylander out west etc. It’s easy to think that Calgary could make sense but there is lots to consider and the Flames would have to shed further salary moving forward..
Interesting story line to follow to say the least.

Well, sure, that amount is paying for a top pairing D man plus your top defensive forward.

I think you're missing my point
Toronto doesn't want to pay Nylander $8M so why would they take on an amount of salary exceeding that?

Not unless you're asking a question that's unclear- he identified the exact reason they would do that; to spread the cap hit over two important players instead of one very important player.

They address a need for a D man with that alotted cap space. And Frolik would be a UFA quickly.

Toronto has cap issues going forward if they pay Nylander or anyone that amount of cash with Matthews and Marner left to pay.

Acquiring Nylander makes ZERO sense for the Flames. Wing is already our strongest and deepest position. Nylander would arguably be our 4th best winger and would cost $8M+, along with assets to acquire.
Insanity.
If assets are going to be spend to strengthen the team, they need to be for 1) a goalie or 2) a C.
Then there is also the fact that we are already the softest team in the west.
Acquiring Nylander would cost assets we don't have, would ruin the cap situation, would strengthen our strongest position at the cost of other positions, and make us even softer.
God, I can't wait for him to sign or be traded so this ridiculous speculation can end.

People are mentioning Brodie, Valimaki, and Hanifin. From everything I have heard out of TO and I hear a lot because I live in Leafs nation is that they are wanting a RHD. Not even a D man that can play RD, they want a RHD that can play RD with Reilly. None of those guys fit the bill. I think they would want Hamonic, Bennett, and possibly a small add to that. Hamonic is exactly what they are looking for, a two way top 4 RHD. Bennett still has upside and plays a physical game and is cost controlled, it depends on if Dubas sees that upside or not.

I suggested that maybe the plan is to use one of Elias Lindholm or William Nylander at centre.
Last season:
William Nylander took 650 faceoffs at 51.4%
Elias Lindholm took 793 faceoffs at 54.5%

The Flames get worse if they trade any of Brodie, Hamonic, or Hanafin for a winger. Andersson, Stone, Valimaki, or Kylington are our only real options, and of them only Andersson makes sense for Toronto.
Bennett also doesn't make sense. We have to trade some salary. Which means Frolik, Gaudreau, Lindholm, Ryan, Monahan, Backlund, or Neal has to go back. The only ones that make sense are Frolik and Neal. Only Neal makes sense long term since we can't afford Neal, Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Nylander,
and Lindholm on the wing long term.

Where did I say I think they should trade for Nylander? I totally agree with you, I am just saying what the Leafs are going to want in return. Nylander for us makes no sense cost and salary wise.

I wasn't disagreeing with you. Just commenting on the names you mentioned. I agree that Nylander doesn't make a lot of sense for the Flames, and it makes zero sense if we are talking about Hamonic being in the deal.
If Toronto would take Neal and Andersson that does make some sense. But I think it's unlikely they will do that deal.

Pesce and Ferland. I'd be ok with that I guess. Pesce goes 5 years after this season and Ferland would be a good fit on the Leafs this season.

Ferland is probably worth a first round pick at the deadline if Carolina misses the playoffs and is a great piece for the playoffs. He isn't a throw in.
Pesce is $4.025 x 6 and is 23 years old. He is a super valuable piece on his own becaue of his age, ability and affordability. I think expecting Ferland in addition to Pesce is a huge reach, especially when you add in the fact Nylander is getting $6-8m from a Carolina team that is stingy (so over values Pesce's contracts and undervalues Nylander's). Add to that, there is a huge risk Nylander flounders this year because he's sat out for so long.
I find it hard to believe Toronto could expect much more than Nylander for Hamilton or Pesce straight up.
Toronto is dealing from a position of weakness. There is a huge gun to their head to figure this out by December 1.
