Personally, I've spent more money than most to go to the Olympics and it's a great time. I remember getting excited and learning all about curling back in 88 as a kid.
But I have no idea about this bid being a good, bad or a bloated ####wad of a deal. We have last minute made up numbers slapped together with highly questionable financial instruments and numbers that wouldn't pass the sniff test in the real business world. I really wish we could have confidence in a proper, cleaner plan given the sheer magnitude of the cost.
If we're gonna have a multi billion dollar party or a economic booster, let's at least have a clear and reasonable idea of the cost and plan. Not with fake insurance, false return on investment claims and confusion about something as simple as who is paying for overruns.

And in all honesty, this is one of the ways that the voters have been given a terrible false equivalency for this plebiscite. The choice is not "do you want the Olympics or a perfect budget going forward?" That's kind of how it's positioned, and it's just a red herring. The "no" side has acted as though we have this cash sitting there and it can either be spent on the Olympics or solving all of our upcoming fiscal woes. The truth is that the money isn't coming from the IOC/feds/province if we say no...there's no option of spending it elsewhere.

My wife and I are going to vote yes this morning - on the way shortly.
We also have reservation and concerns, and the information is not perfect but overall I 'believe' this will be good for the city if selected, and possibly speed up some capital spending.
And of course it is not a 10:1 ROI.
What is disappointing though are a number of the councillors who are voting no, and will continue to vote no in council or committee meetings even if the citizens vote yes.
Will be interesting to see what happens.

I think this vote is going to be too close to call. I went and voted no.
The undecideds might carry the day, but I would be interested to know how that's worked in terms of plebiscites in the past and whether the undecideds vote cautiously or not.

That’s my sense too, but that’s all it is—a sense.
Again, my gut (based on nothing other than a hunch) is that the NO side went into today with a lead from advance polling, and that this will come down to how many people vote today and which way undecideds break. If our hunch is right, this will be close. If Election Day voters are more like 50/50, then the NO side wins this running away.

We should ask the mayor that if it's a 1:10 then why do it on the cheap? Invest 10 billion and get 100 billion back. Biggest games ever!

They really have shaken my confidence for sure. That's another negative aspect, the sheer amount of confusion and misinformation from the BidCo this early in the process does not bode well if we were to move forward and shovels actually hit the ground. It's basically an order of magnitude leap in planning and logistics. Maybe they pull it together but all the early signs are they will struggle and it is both not a good omen for the games coming in even close to budget.

Like I said, I'll pull out my TFSA's, RRSP, max my credit cards and get a 2nd and 3rd mortgage for that sweet, sweet 10 times return on investment that our mayor is literally claiming even now.
Literally every city in the world would be rioting the host the games if it were even remotely true.
Why treat Calgarians like they're morons with such an obvious lie when you are dealing with Billions of dollars? Just put together a reasonable and transparent plan that we can have confidence in.

They are using scanners to count the ballots, that would explain why the results will come in all at once. Once the last ballot is scanned they'll have the count, no need to count and report by each polling site. Personally I'm not a fan of electronic voting or counting but at least they have the hard copies to go back to if needed.
One thing that is ridiculous is that they have you fill out a form before getting a ballot and then the ballot itself is another full size sheet of paper. That's 2 full size sheets for every voter. I'm guessing they did this to be compatible with the scanner but it seems like a massive waste of paper.

I'm voting yes, I don't completely trust bid and think they failed miserably at PR and their sales pitch. But I think their numbers are in the right ballpark.
The no side I trust even less, every time I looked into their numbers they were either outright lies or clear attempts to fudge their numbers.
As far as I can tell this will cost around ~2k per household across 10 or 25 years which isn't much. And a good chunk of this money is going to be spent otherwise, but without provincial and federal money guaranteed. The cost Federally and Provincially is negligible on a per taxpayers basis, and the fed money will be spent anyways, maybe not in Calgary though.
My son will be 10 when these games happen, and I remember the 88 Olympics as a child and think it'll be a great experience for him. So much happened during the 88 games even if you didn't actually go to them.
