Nothing is certain, my friend
I was putting cream in my coffee at a Starbucks last week and these two old codgers are talking about how they want the Republicans in the U.S. to keep hold of the Senate...I'm thinking, "Wow, these fellas..." and then I notice the Yes Calgary button on his lapel.

I see ageism is still alive and well on CP.
Im curious...at what age exactly does one cross the realm into "crusty geriatric" territory?

So with this while We can’t include a new Arena in the bid Narrative the following things don’t make sense.
- McMahon is getting money - University owned primary tenant Pricate sports team
- Nakiska is getting money - Privately owned and operated for profit ski hill
- Saddledome is getting money - city owned Leased, Operated and maintained by private entity.
If the above 3 arrangements are acceptable to get Olympic Money why wouldn’t an Arena be?

Shocker, not all old people are against this. Even bigger shocker, not all young people are for this. We will see how this goes, but the early indicators are certainly not positive for the Yes side (hence the increased desperation). Be interesting to see what blast from the past they try and pull out over the final days. Maybe have another Brian vs. Brian at Olympic Plaza?

Here's to hoping crusty old naysayers like myself go out and vote NO in droves, fit 15 to 20 of us in those white vans.

It seems pretty clear to me that the angle is:
If Yes wins, the 6,000 person arena money goes to CSSC along with some sort of cherry on top which will come very close to being in the middle of what the 2 sides were proposing. We would then be able to use 2 full sized arenas for the games before shutting the saddledome down.
It's too much emotion to announce this right now + no point in announcing only for the no vote to win and then back to square 1.

If they announce it after the bid goes through, it's political idiocy. Attaching them together makes it one big thing, separating them makes it a whole new issue. Plus I've now heard this a few times outside of CP, but there is definitely more than a few people that don't want this bid without an arena. If it's going to happen, they should probably announce it now, I seriously doubt it costs them any votes besides people who already weren't voting Yes.

I say this with complete respect but your posts and persistence to convince people that the yes side is getting crushed has become comical.
Let's face it, none of us has any idea which way this vote is going. It is going to be very close.
You have made multiple comments that you try to portray as facts when it is an opinion just like the other posts in this thread. You have also mentioned added or increased desperation for the yes vote because of the campaign ramping up. The yes side has a lot of cash which must be used in a very short period of time which has nothing to do with desperation.

A deal has to be made to make an announcement and I am sure one is in place with some grey area. Neither side is going to show their cards on a hypothetical of a yes vote but they can show half of their cards to show that they are on the right path.

No question that i would fall under this arbitrary number, im just curious where it all starts!
I mean i personally live with a 20 year old that wants nothing to do with the city taking on this risk, so is that the age if you are a no?

Some interesting comments from Jeff Davison today regarding the new Event Centre - seems like they're working on a proposal for the Flames to start negotiating with. This was included:
Quote:
Calgarians will vote next Tuesday in the 2026 Winter Olympic plebiscite, but Davison said he wants to move forward regardless of the outcome. He added there could be some synergy and cost savings if a deal can be done.
“You don’t want to have competing priorities for dollars that the city has to spend. Interesting enough with that Olympic bid you wouldn’t need all of those renovation dollars. There are probably $150 million would come out of the budget just because there would be a way to cost share a little bit in terms of building a new facility rather than retrofitting a bunch of older facilities,” he said.
|
He seems to think there could be some way to use some Olympic funds for a new arena.

Nenshi himself has said the Yes side is behind on a few different occasions. And given that we now know the Yes side was using bots the manipulate the engagement site results, the Strongly No side was in fact real, and that number was in the 60s, and the town hall boards also showed lopsided support for No.
And it is desperation. The Yes side has all of the actual internal polling. If they were ahead, they wouldn't risk overdoing it and swinging votes the other way just by annoying people (which their recent push has done, of course). They are behind and trying to catch up.

Announcing an arena deal after the bid is approved means the arena deal is going to be worse than the city's previous offers (from the taxpayer perspective). The CSEC will demand (and receive) more public money than before. Given that support for previous deals was low, an even worse deal isn't going to go over very well. Smarter to tie it into the Olympics so you can at least dress up the hit better.

The amount of contradiction in this quote vs what Mary Moran stated last week is incredible. Does anyone know what anyone else is saying?
If they include a new arena, its an entirely different conversation for a whole lot of people.
Hilarious to watch it all unfold though.
