McDavid has a few skillsets nobody can match, but Crosby has been as complete package of player as there is...he has had a killer mix of talent, intelligence and drive. And most importantly, he's done it at the highest level, and when it matters. The only thing that has let him down is his health.

Yeah the definition of generational is always odd and depends on the person.
For me I look at it as a simple question - is the player considered the best in the league for a sustained period of time.

I look at it in about decade long windows.

I generally agree with that, although the length of that "sustained period" is important. For me a generational player has to be the best not just for 2-3 years, but a solid 10+.

McDavid is most likely that guy now. Can he sustain it for another decade? We will see I guess.

Yup agreed. Iginla was the best player in the game for a very short period of time. Not generational.
I would argue Nik Lindstrom is a generational defenseman based on his sustained period of being the very best blueliner. But doesn't often get talked about that way.
But in general for some reason, when folks talk about generational players it seems like it's always forwards.
Who are the dmen and goalies that should be considered generational?



Dmen: Orr, Lindstrom. Who else?
Goalies: Roy, Brodeur, Hasek? Plante? Sawchuk? Dryden?


Seems more clear with forwards: Richard, Howe, Gretzky, Lemiuex, Crosby, etc.

Coffey won 2 in the mid 80s and then picked up a 3rd with the Wings, which for some reason I COMPLETELY don't recall.

Bourque won 5

McDavid is a generational talent, anyone who thinks otherwise has homer glasses on.

He's the best player since Crosby, Crosby is the best player to ever play (not adjusted for eras).
