And this is why the finances of the bid are screwed without the NHL involved. Good luck charging even $255 per ticket for those seats without NHL players. There is an absolute ####load of money that will be lost without them going.

I wonder if you could get insurance on ticket revenue instead of cost over runs. Probably doesn't exist either.

I'm a bit slow but I just noticed today that the 1.2 billion from the IOC isn't all cash. It's cash and "in kind goods and services". An example of a service is their consulting. And an example of a good provided was when officials from Calgary need to fly to Switzerland to ask some questions in person...the IOC pays their way. Apparently the goods and services can run pretty high, like 2/3 of the total in Rio.

The bidco report only accounts for 700 million cad in contributions from the IOC so it appears it is accounted for. The common mistake people make is the games will have 2.3 billion in revenue plus 1.2 billion from the IOC when instead it is 2.3 billion in total revenue which includes 700 million from the IOC. So Canada invests 3 billion to get 2.3 billion in revenues much of which is provided by Canadians through tickets and not external investments

I interviewed Mary Moran today for my podcast she mentioned an insurance policy with respect to the circumstance the NHL does not participate.

Anybody see the pretty comprehensive 5 minute ad on YouTube convincing viewers to vote yes? They even got Iggy and Lanny on there. They sure got that together pretty quickly....

Feels like the some people with deep pockets are wanting to really peer pressuring citizens into thinking they can't possibly refuse this.

Well.... How much? Kind of an important metric, considering those athletes play the most lucrative winter Olympic sport.

And if the BidCo is biased, then why isn't it a stretch to say that they've spun the numbers of every report they've published (with or without the help of consultants) or every analysis is tilted towards a yes?

As someone whose worked over a decade Investment Banking, Equity Research and financial analysis (where we used external consultants), I can tell you - unequivocally - that I can present a strong financial argument for both a "Yes" and a "No." We often took the answer we wanted and worked backwards to get to the preconceived result. And the main reason we used external consultants is so that we had someone to throw under the bus if things went bad - which they often did, because we weren't searching for truth (we were providing justification for the actions our client wanted to take)

Trust me - the BidCo is doing the same thing - that's exactly why they're so easily able to get the "perfect answer" and find "win-win-win" solutions. The reason the cost overruns for events such as these are always high and always biased to being over-budget than under-budget is because the estimates are biased to the downside because those presenting the analysis are very, very biased.

Don't trust the politicians or the BidCo - they are biased and have a lot to personally gain by a "yes" vote regardless of the cost to everyone else.
BidCo. is not supposed to be neutral - their whole mandate is to prepare a successful bid for the Olympics, so I'm not sure why they'd act like they don't care either way. To paraphrase a line from Councillor Gondek, they're "BidCo", not "NoBidCo.".

And you're 100% right, anyone with skills with numbers can make any case they want, that's why it essentially boils down to how you feel about it personally - if you don't like the idea, you'll agree with the negative spin; if you like the idea, you'll agree with the positive spin.

Anyone else get the automated call from the City about joining the telephone town hall on the vote?
Little late for me because I have already voted.

Speaking of peer pressure, did you hear about the no groups standing outside of the polling stations telling people to vote no?

I'm looking for reports of this and finding nothing. Care to share a link?

There were also Yes groups standing outside encouraging people to vote yes at other advance polling stations - the news showed both groups.

Both seemed to be civilized enough that they didn't stay at the same station and cause a scene.

Dowtown Red Deer is right on the Mason Dixon line. The Enmax Centrium is just south of the city.. so technically Soutern Alberta..?

I think the World Cup should replace the Olympics as the best on best hockey tournament.

If Calgary hosts the Olympics, I can make an exception though.

I'll have a hard time cheering against Johnny and Tkachuk to be honest.

There were more than a dozen people on Stephen Ave yesterday canvassing for the Yes vote. The Yes side also has a lot of money for stupid commercials with kids talking about how hopeful they are for the future.
