That sounds great in theory, but if there's a number one guy with no question marks, he's probably not available.

Flames need to try the Kipper route - find a goalie who still has potential but has been under-performing, and try to find out why he's under-performing.

You're right, and that's insane.

Or you know, they could see if they already have that player in Rittich and just have to play him consistently to find out.

That's fair, and you are right that my choice of words in this instance was poor.

Sometimes athletic goalies make ridiculous saves to recover from putting them self out of position.
Which was precisely the intent of my post, although I would argue that Smith's acrobatics were not so often a result of poor positioning. I was countering, however poorly, this outlandish notion that somehow ...

Good on you for keeping me accountable for my own hyperbolic use of language, but let's not lose sight of the point here, which is that it is very poor form to depend on revisionist history to popularize notions about and trends in a player's present performance.

They could, but they seem unwilling at that point to give it a try.

Maybe his performance last year when he was given the ball is concerning them, I don't know.

But when you have a guy struggling as much as Smith has, then it seems bizarre that they haven't already turned to Rittich more often.

it's time to roll with Rittich. Not only because Smith has been bad, but also because they need to figure out what they have in Rittich. Is he "only" a decent backup, or can he carry the pressure of a much bigger workload? He couldn't last year, but can he now? Important to find out. Smith is probably gone after this season anyway and their confidence in Rittich will be important with regards to how they tackle the goaltender position going forward.

Why do people keep saying this?

Rittich has started four of the last ten games, which is WAY up from his limited starts last year. If anything, I think the coaches are showing an increased willingness to see what he has to offer, and I understand their hesitation to suddenly foist him into a position that he is possibly not quite ready to assume.

I predict Peters will start Rittich against LA just so we can avoid losing two games in a row. Smith will probably get back in for SJ.

Because when you starter is playing terrible and your backup is still starting less than 50 percent of the games in a 10-game stretch, I don't consider that giving him the ball.

Smith still has it and he's been dropping it every time.

Giving Rittich more of a chance is, imo not the same thing as saying "Hey, the job is yours if you play well enough, here's a bunch of starts in a row to see what you can do."

If that had happened to McDavid or Matthews, the entire hockey world would be up in arms and screaming for justice, and new rules would immediately be put in place to prevent it.

There already are rules to prevent it.

Honestly, our media is pretty bad at pointing out dirty plays. If these plays don't get a big reaction from the team media, the NHL doesn't notice.

That should have been a 5-on-3 to end the game. Nobody mentioned the Getzlaf crosscheck except for a couple posters here, and its clearly what actually hurt Gaudreau given that the slash was stick on stick on first impact.

No news. Day off for the team so no media. Any interview I've heard today with guys around the team (Wills, Lou) have said nothing.

All I know is that the bad stretch of Rittich is better than the recent stretch of Smith.

Bad Rittich could be an improvement

Rittich may not be proven yet, as he hasn't really been given that chance. But what I like about him is that he just seems so calm in net. His positioning and rebound control is generally solid, and routine saves don't appear to be a struggle for him like they are with Smith. He never seems to panic or flop around like Smith does, and just looks like a more confident goaltender based on the few games we've seen him in so far.

Watching as a fan, I'm not terrified like I am watching Smith, and I'm confident that Rittich will actually make a big save once in a while.
