I would like to see an extended run starting Rittich to see if he can carry the ball first before selling the farm for a goalie.

It's time.
At the very least, it might light a fire under Smith. Not that I don't think the effort is there from Smith, but internal competition is never a bad thing and Rittich has earned it IMO.

I'm also not convinced he would sign an extension with the flames right away. Florida needs goaltending and have a strong Russian community . Could be a very appealing spot for him.
The only hope right now is Ritch takes the ball and runs with it or Smith finds his game. I'm not convinced on either , but have better hopes for first option.

And the often stated narrative is that Russians like the big cities - NYC in particular.

No one is selling their goalie this early into the season.

yeah you have to think when this happens ..
Step 1 - let him play out of it
Step 2 - see if your backup can handle it
Step 3 - fortify your goaltending with a move
I would guess we are moving into step 2 now

So, Mike Smith has recently been linked to the Philadelphia Flyers and the Florida Panthers.
At least these guys have better numbers than Smith lol.

I sure hope we are in step 2. I wonder if they will let the good old backup play both games back 2 back this weekend if he is good game 1

I would do a straight up swap Jimmy Howard for Mike Smith + 3rd.
Howard has been putting up decent numbers on an abysmal Detroit team so far. (Detroit looks like they are tanking for Hughes, so this benifiets that motive)
2.93 GAA
0.917 SV%
He's on the last year of his contract like Smith is.

Why would Detroit? Trade a guy who's played for them for years for a worse goalie?

Well they are in the part of the cycle where turning up the suck isn't necessarily a bad thing.
