I'm impressed you can keep up with this stuff. I used to eat up new music and these lists, but since I've had kids my brain has just atrophied

now I consider myself 'hip' if I can just keep up with the new releases of the bands I liked in 1997

This site is a treasure trove if you like lists about music (like the John Cusack character in High Fidelity).

http://www.rocklist.net/

What's it all about? Want some ideas of what to fill that 60 Gb iPod up with?
At the end of each year, critics & readers of music publications select their favourite albums and singles of the year.

Lists from publications including: New Musical Express, Melody Maker, Select, Q, Mojo, Rolling Stone, Spin, & Village Voice, various European publications and several independent fanzines from around the globe plus the complete John Peel Festive 50's are included on this site.

There are critic single and album lists from 1974 to 2006, pop poll results from 1952 to 2006, personal lists from critics including Dave Marsh and Robert Christgau plus All Time Best Film Soundtrack and Banned recordings.

After a few strong years, I thought it was kind of a weak year for music. TV on the Radio, and Arctic Monkeys stood out as good albums. Other than that, I don't really care for anything else on these people's lists. In fact, I can't stand most of the cds they listed.

As per that other thread, I have great hopes for 2007.

I have been thinking about getting The Greatest by Cat Power. Seems to have done real well on those lists, anyone a fan?

I prefer the last one You are Free (more guitars and hooks). The new one is more like a country record.

Wait a minute..shouldn't the Killer's album have been #1 on all those lists?

Anyways, these lists mean pretty much nothing to me. Seems like most of them cater to the demographic that the magazine shoots for anyways. For example, Amazon includes stuff like John Mayer, and NME includes stuff like Kasabian. Big suprise. I'm not even gonna bother reading the wankers at Pitchfork.

That being said, here's the only list that matters. My top 5:

1. My Morning Jacket - Okonokos
2. Thom Yorke - The Eraser
3. The Strokes - First Impressions of Earth
4. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I am, that's what I'm not
5. Tool - 10,000 Days

I'm going to make up my list any day now. Joanna Newsom - Ys, The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America, Beirut - Gulag Orkestar, Califone - Roots & Crowns, Danielson - Ships and Junior Boys - So This is Goodbye are a few of the albums which will likely crack my top 10.

I love Dan Bejars' words, but man, I cannot stand the sound of his singing.

Like that Yo La Tengo as well. And The Avalanche is good especially since it's out-takes from Illinois

Pretty weak music year for me. Not much inspiration in 2006.
Twilight Singers - Powders Burns was an amazing album though.

I wish I had the time and money to sample that much music. I'm jealous.

The one CD I bought this year that I felt was phenomenal was Tool's 10,000 days.

Sparklehorse has something NEW out?!!! Why was I not aware of this...I kept pestering and pestering record stores between each cd of theirs...and finally gave up hope after a long time this time around.

But if that's the case, sweet, I'm definately going to have to pick it up.

How does it sound? Is it mellow like the last one, or more electic like some of the previous stuff, or...?

Do yourself a favour and just give Neko Case's album a listen. Download some tracks or something.. it's just amazing. Country sound, but still..

Agreed about the relatively weak music selection this year. But there were some really good things put out.

Same thing here man, it feels as though I waited a bloody decade for their new album to come out!

It's definitely the weakest of their efforts so far but I still feel it's a pretty damn good album. It's a pretty good mix of sounds overall, a few really quiet tracks along with a few fairly electric-driven tunes. I'm a huge fan of Good Morning Spider and Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot and this album doesn't come close to beating those two but it's still pretty decent (it cracked my top 15 of the year fairly easily).
