I can't imagine the IOC is really looking to help an NHL club build a rink when the NHL snubbed them last time.

And this is another major, major issue that isn't getting enough play. The BidCo can lie however they'd like, but it'd be financially devastating to not have NHL players in 2026. Given the relationship between the NHL and IOC is awful, it's not something that should be ignored.

I think devastating is a tad over dramatic, but yes you could charge more for tickets with NHL'ers playing.

If it is like Vancouver tickets will be sold before both the schedule and NHL participation is finalized.

The ticket lottery deadline was Nov 7 2008 for the 2010 games.

NHL participation will only impact Scalper resale prices which could indirectly affect the number of lottery entries but since Men's hockey is so over subscribed anyways it won't matter.

The bigger disappointment would be losing curling to somewhere else in Alberta as that in Vancouver was a low cost way for locals to get to go to an event. Tickets were $20 each and seating was between 3-5000 for 36 draws and now adding another 18 for mixed doubles and that is 150,000 to 250,000 tickets that are lost.

This bid hurts Calgarys chances of getting a new arena for the flames. The province and the city put their money in the olympics basket. That means no financial contribution to a new arena, especially from the province. Flames ownership will be 100% on the hook to get one built in the near future. That’s based on Calgarys budget for the olympics. If a deal happens with the flames then expect cost overruns. Personally I would rather a higher bid that includes a new arena. Now we have a situation where Flames ownership is backed in a corner. It’s their own fault mind you for not taking a perfectly reasonable offer from the city. It’s too bad because Calgarians could have had their cake and eat it too.

^^These comments are all speculation, furthermore there never was federal or provincial money for the Flames arena.

I can’t vote but if I could I’d vote no even if it was in my city. Too much money for nebulous benefit.

NHL participation will be finalized by 2022 the latest, when they negotiate the new CBA. Unless the BidCo wants to go extremely bold and put tickets out there before that, we'll know the status. But if Calgary does end up hosting, will be interesting to see if local politicians start to interject themselves into the CBA given the city would have financial incentive to do so.

The way this poll is turning out, it looks like basically nothing has changed, and people are sticking to their original vote?

Insurance that other Olympic bid cities are on record as trying and failing to find. Insurance that Calgary has searched for now for 3 years and still failed. But it's low balled in our budget because we lie.

You can pretty much guarantee that the tax increases are going to be $11k on average because, once again, tax increases are going to be permanent.

Oh yeah, and taxes are already going up. And have already gone up.

I'm with you, I hope the city and the flames can come together and use this opportunity to convert a fairly useless 5000 seat arena into a 20k needed arena, I'm also not too excited in putting $80 million dollar lipstick on a pig called McMahon

There is no backdoor to funding any part of the arena in this proposal, and if you believe the BidCo including one would significantly harm Calgary's chances (against...no one?). I know people want to believe this poverty games actually includes a lot of ways to make it better, but it just doesn't. I mean they're already cutting housing to make this work, if anything it looks like this bid could be thinned out even more.
