The arrogance of that is astounding. The media asks the other team's coach every single night about playing McD and Draisaitl (it's their job). It gets turned around on him once, and he scoffs?...
The Oilers deserve every single bad thing that ever happens to them.

He'll probably get a compliance buyout next fall.
I think there would still be a market for him as a UFA afterwards.

Because of his contract structure, the Oilers don't save anything on their cap for a buyout. Another fail by Chia.

You could see three things were happening in the NHL.
1) More young players were entering on entry level contracts to give teams more balance under the salary cap
2) This youth and the recent tend towards young skill meant the game was speeding up dramatically season to season.
3) Concussion fears and political correctness were pretty much pushing fighting out of hockey.
As a result Lucic lost his entire game in 24 months.
The Oilers went out and bought a betamax instead of a VCR.
|
*ahem* A betamax IS a VCR. Stands for video cassette recorder. I think you mean VHS.
Continue.

Compliance buyouts after CBA negotiations don't count towards the cap.

Yeah, that's probably right, but still, I mean, even the slowest player in the world Jaromir Jagr was a fairly effective hockey player as recent as beginning of last season, primarily due to making good use of his physical tools. When Lucic was at his peak he was really strong on the puck which is something that in theory should bring him some success even in this new era. Or was he really that bad at everything else and had hockey IQ like a brick wall even at his peak? I can't say I ever followed him enough to know too much about him.
After all, there are a few players around age 30 who have been able to adjust fairly well to the new NHL. If Lucic ends up in the low 20s points wise that has to be one of the more dramatic drops in effectiveness ever for an NHL player. I'm just so happy that it's happening to the Oilers.

There was no market for a guy like Glencross, and every year even more veterans get pushed out. If Lucic keep playing as bad as he is now for the entire year and gets an eventual buyout, he is at best in PTO territory and he's not very likely to steal a spot from anyone. If he picks up his game, perhaps, but how likely is that to happen?

The CBA isn’t being exactly being negotiated. Both sides will vote on if they want to extend the current CBA past 2019/20 season until 2022 in Sept 2019.
I think the owners are content... being that the player aren’t exactly the sharpest tools in the shed they’ll probably think they can get a better deal when in every negotiation they do not.
Either way Lucy is around Ed’Mutton for at least one more season after this one.

Depends on what the new CBA says. And that's not "next fall" anyway.

Well it's not like he's been a liability this season. He's playing fairly well and getting a grade A scoring chance nearly every game.
That's not worth $6 million of course.
If his hands don't come back I would expect he could still land a Reaves level contract.

Yeah, maybe you're right about that. But 1.125 million is likely pretty much spot on for what he is worth at this point. Remains to be seen then for how many seasons he will get paid 5 million more than his actual worth. Compliance buyouts in the next CBA at this point is very far from a sure thing.

Lucic isn't "doesn't belong in the NHL" bad. But that contract is horrific, I don't even mean this season. I mean the four seasons after this one.

The current CBA is expires after the 2021–22 season. Lucic's contract goes to 2022-2023 season. They usually have buyout compliance period to help get teams in compliance due to changes in the CBA. If there isn't any major changes then I don't even know if there will be a buyout compliance period.
At any rate, at least 4 more season (including this one) left before the possibility of that to occur.

I think the answer is clearly for the Oilers to deploy Paul Coffey to work on Lucic's skills. Once that happens, Lucic will be a superstar and Mcdavid will have a tough time keeping up.

Yeah, that feeling you get when you're relying on Rattie Hatty to help you against Tampa.

Surely there must be someone else from the 80s oilers that is in need of a job that can be Lucics personal assistant? Or are they all employed by Katz already?
