Replacing Smith with Lyon seems like a huge and unnecessary risk right now.
Smith has had a tough start, but the team has also been far from stellar defensively in front of him. He has bounced back with two great games now.
We all saw what happened when Rittich was given the reigns last year. Trading a guy you know can play 40-50 quality games for a guy with 11 career starts just screams panic move.
It’s not like Lyon is a cant miss prospect or has dominated the AHL either. Other than this year he has comparable numbers to Gillies.

So..... In the off season?
He's a one year on and one year injured goalie. He'd be good for cgy next season but then we're right back to the same situation again we are in with Smitty. Aging goalie who may or may not break under a heavy work load. And if we want to use the whole mileage thing? Quicks a car that's got about 385000km in him. Whereas Smith's just getting into that 300000km range.

Why does Ottawa trade the two best players in the deal, including the player they are going to build their team around?
Presumably simply to help Calgary?

To unite the Tkachuk brothers
But, seriously, Duchene is a UFA at the end of the season and he's not staying there.
Calgary is giving up 3 good young players with potential and a 1st for one potentially great player and a UFA vet who won't be signing. Could be more to the deal. But it's a lot better then the Calgary's old vets for X suggestions I see on here...

Ottawa doesn’t need to involve Tkachuk to move Duchene.
And you haven’t given up any player you desperately want to keep.

Let's not get "shiny new toy" syndrome over a player we do not even have, just because he is a Tkachuk.

Brady Tkachuk will not be Calgary Flame any time in the near future. Let’s just accept it and move along.

That package won't get you Brady by himself, let alone Duchene as a rental on top of that.
I would imagine if they move Duchene as a rental they will be looking for a minimum of a roster player, strong prospect, and a first round pick.

To pry Brady out of Ottawa, we'd be looking at either giving up Mony or Johnny IMO. Calgary doesn't have any real valuable trading pieces to offer outside of those two that Ottawa would want IMO.

And somehow we still have Smith in this equation?
If you're gonna make a trade like that you better have a Price or equivalent #1 goalie in return

Eklund's Mike Smith Rumor today,
Quote:
The Panthers need help in goal and it is currently killing what would otherwise be a serious divisional contender...Luongo is slated to come back as early as this next game, but they have really gotten nothing out of his backups. Mike Smith, who plays very similar style game to Luongo, may be the option if Luongo goes down again due to injury...I was told it is VERY much in the conversation...
More to come...
