The Sagarin Ratings on USAToday.com take into account schedule difficulty, and have the Flames 9th overall in the league.

TSN showed a wide angle on the hit on Janko...it's a text book charge. Guy skates across the entire blue line and accelerates into the hit.

Massive difference between that and a guy stepping up on the PUCK CARRIER at the blue line

Throw in travel and I think it's the Flames hardest stretch of the season. Two two game road trips to the east in 10 days. Meanwhile Oilers opponent is playing the night before almost every home game. Surprised the Avs aren't there tonight.

Especially when you consider the number of lost practice days by going out for two, home for two, out for two, home for two ....

Was at the game...

This team definatley reminds me of the 2015 team.

We're never out of it until the final buzzer.

What a great game!

Only negative is Mike Smith looks like he has a lot of holes.

Were there any updates on Janko since last night?
he sat the entire 3rd period on the bench.

The entire tying goal sequence made my day. Not sure if my old age has invented an imagined memory of the event, yet I seem to remember Rasmus’ reaction to the Valimaki hit. Rather than the typical celebratory huddle and gather at the goal scorer Rasmus went directly to his d partner. Exciting times. Watching this young pairing grow together has incredible potential. Top, second, or third pairing ...whatever the ceiling. Happy for them.

Wow. Long time to take for first post.

Wonder if Peters wasn't a fan of Janko slamming the glass when he had to step off the ice after the hit.

It's been said many times but the biggest difference between this team and the 2014-2015 team is this team is not being dramatically outplayed and just lucking into victory. Even with the three brutal games and being underwater in terms of some statistics (high danger chances and shots), they are significantly above water in terms of others (shot attempts, unblocked shot attempts and scoring chances). They also have an even goal differential.

Peters said in his post-game interview that Janko was fine and he was just running with three forwards lines in the third period and somebody had to sit. He said he'll be in the lineup Saturday night.

He is on the ice at practice right now. Seems like an optional today. My guess is the boys went out last night, rightfully so.

This was the best description of the Neal goal celebration:

I don't think I've ever been more irritated with a win.

This is a good team. The "Mike Smith is your starter" argument is fine if he's a) having a good start to the season or b) has years left on his deal and you have to try and salvage him.

Smith is a pending UFA. He's 36. The time has come for him to transition to a veteran backup.

Start Rittich Saturday.

Good catch. In the final angle on the replays I was looking at you can see Rasmus point at Valimaki and skate his way first. Awesome to see. I've liked Rasmus' reactions in a few situations, he really seems to enjoy the team successes - the classic from the Ranger gam where he gets up off the ice after being wrestled down, hands in the air, cheering Hathaway's goal

No, it's not. Because the goalie is not up to the challenge. That doesn't go away just because the deepest Flames team in a decade saved his ass.

Your starter cannot give up a backbreaking goal per game, and Smith does at least that.

You're right and I'd venture to say 95%+ of the people on this board have acknowledged in a number of different ways that Mike Smith needs to get his **** together and that they should start Rittich next game.

But wasn't that comeback fun? Didn't we get two points and currently sit in top spot in the division?

They won in spite of Mike Smith's brutal goaltending performance. There are a lot of positives to take from that game.

For me, it was enough that Cole targeted Jankowski and skated across the ice to blow him up. It also looked to me like he got his arm up high when he hit him. I am undecided about whether he left his feet while launching into Jankowski, or whether it was the hit itself that carried him off his feet.
The force of impact is what took Cole off his feet. Also, I think accusing Cole of targeting Jankowski is just an attempt at a post facto rationalization. He was moving to cut off the breakout play. It just so happened that Hanafin set his teammate up with a suicide pass.

I'd be livid if a Flames player was given a major for that hit, and I completely understand why Avs fans aren't happy in this case.

And, not to play the appeal to authority card, but you could tell that Rick Ball was pretty surprised to see it called a major. Derek Wills didn't think it should have been a penalty, and Peter Loubardias said no penalty, or a minor at most.

Ultimately though, once you get past that issue, there's a lot to like about how the Flames responded. Bennett stepping up for his teammate was huge, and then the PPG to spark the comeback were exactly what we needed.

I am definitely starting to get this 'Championship' mentality feeling from this team after the last few games.

From Scott Darling's Player's Tribune article.
Quote:
Just seeing the looks on those guys’ faces, down 3–0, said it all. There was no fear. The core players on that team were some of the most gifted athletes I’ve ever seen, both physically and mentally. Their mentality when they got down was, How long is it going to take for us to come back?
