I think it is an easy explanation. Goalies go through highs and lows and Smith has proven more than Rittich throughout their career. He isn't leaning on 1 only but giving both equal opportunities.
To make a run at playoffs, we will need Smith to be on his game. We saw what happened last year when we relied on Riddich. Riddich could falter just as easy as Smith picking it up so I like that he is keeping them both in the game right now.

I cringe every time the puck goes near our net. Smith does not look confident. Seems to be struggling to make even routine saves.
