I'm voting yes so i can rent my house out for $8000 for 2 weeks.
Good point.... anyone concerned about the tax increase could break even renting out their home and going on a vacation to get away from the games they don't want.

I'm naturally skeptical of this being a good idea and don't know how it's going to turn out, but holy hell its been an interesting ride reviewing Canada's history with referendums!
See how many times you have to read the question(s) to realize where you fall on it:
Plebiscite on conscription 1942 Are you in favour of releasing the Government from any obligations arising out of any past commitments restricting the methods of raising men for military service?
Quebec referendum 1995 Do you agree that Quebec should become sovereign after having made a formal offer to Canada for a new economic and political partnership within the scope of the bill respecting the future of Quebec and of the agreement signed on June 12, 1995?
If they aren't using the same polling locations as the municipal election and instead targeting specific locations where support might be higher, then it's just more of the same conflict that the city seems to have no issue engaging in with regards to forcing a specific outcome.
But it's not really unexpected since Nenshi and friends really didn't want Calgarians to have a say in the first place and Mary Moran has made her and BidCo's views on the plebiscite quite clear.
If council didn’t want Calgarians to have a say then why have a plebiscite?
Good point.... anyone concerned about the tax increase could break even renting out their home and going on a vacation to get away from the games they don't want.
Prediction: If Calgary hosts, the city will severely crack down on Airbnb's during that period to make sure hotels get filled.

Do residents get first dibs on event tickets over visitors?
IOC, the various national committees, the corporate partners, politicians, and those connected to the bid will get the majority of tickets to the events people want to go to. Very few tickets will actually be available to the public at face value (resale market though...). I imagine tons of public tickets for skeleton, biathlon and cross country skiing though.

No....nor should they IMO.
A big part of the sell job by the yes side is that it will draw a whole whack of tourists to spend their money. Well if you limit what they will be able to buy tickets for, you limit the reason for them to come to begin with, so they don't.

In Vancouver is was quite easy to get tickets for events for the Olympics. The tickets that did not go to atheltes and associations were lotteried which gives the public a much greater chance at tickets than the ticket master bot system. Outside of Men’s hockey is was quite easy to get tickets through the lottery and the secondary market for non-premium events wasn’t terrible either.
If you want to go to figure skating long programs and Canada hockey games or the opening and closing ceremonies expect it to be tough to get seats. If you want to see biathlon or cross country skiing or ski cross or short track speed skating or curling or women’s hockey there will be plenty of tickets available.

I think....that's more or less exactly what I said? Yeah, premium events are off limits unless you're rich or connected, everything else will probably be available.

"There has never been an Olympic Games that has made a profit," says Robert Barney, director of the International Centre for Olympic Studies at the University of Western Ontario.
Fold in all the costs and revenues, he says, "including federal allotments, municipal allotments, provincial or state allotments, it's always been that a debt has to be paid somewhere."
Of course they’re a money loser. If they weren’t, you’d see private corporations bidding to host them. Not sure what kind of point you’re trying to make.
However it doesn’t mean you automatically say no. If someone else is going to pay for most of them in your city you darn well better consider it hard and look at the numbers.
The additional costs include security and infrastructure improvements not included in the Olympic budgets but provided by government.
Actually, tangible economic benefits are elusive. The 1984 Los Angeles Olympics are often hailed for finishing with a $233 million surplus. But Barney says the calculation includes only direct costs of staging the games and not the indirect costs provided by city, state and federal governments. The same is true, he says, for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary in Alberta, Canada, and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Organizers of both games claimed multimillion-dollar surpluses, but neither included massive federal spending when adding up costs.
"No reasonable person thinks that the direct benefits of hosting the Olympic Games or any other mega event cover the costs," concludes Andrew Rose, an economist at the Haas School of Business at the University of California in Berkeley.
Not only are they expensive, but Olympic Games don’t stay on budget. Between Grenoble 1968 and Nagano 1998, the sports-related cost overrun averaged 230%. Since the new millennium, this has fallen to 75% - hitting a low of just 2% at Beijing 2008.
However, recent Games in London and Sochi have reversed this trend. London’s costs overran by 76%, while Sochi’s by an enormous 289%.
Who the heck cares if there is a profit? It is not a question wether we profit or not, its about having the games here and what it will cost.
For a small hit on my taxes its a no brainer to me.
The no crowd is vocal because it's cool to be the guy that 'can see through the BS' and not be a sheep or whatever. These r the same ppl that end up getting their grossly overpriced iphones, cars and houses they dont need. But they will tell me that olympics are a waste of money. Whatever.
To me it's about the games. Sounds like we may have to pony up a bit in taxes, sure. But i am ok with that, because there will be tons of benefits. The infrastructure will be done at some point anyway surely it won't be free.
As for how the city handled it? Again, who the F cares. It's all about the end results and not childish grudges. Again, calling out the ones that are voting no because of how the process was handled. What does it matter? If u want to preach logic and dollars and cents then dont get emotions to get the best of u. And voting based on how the process went is all about emotions.
With the recession we are going through the Olympics would provide a nice boost to the city businesses. Let's not over analyze every dollar spent here. Unless you do the same at home, and honestly, who here lives for necessities only?
Flame away.

No flaming, but since you don't give a #### about tax increases then you'll happily pay for my increases yeah? Since you don't care and all.

Thats not how it works. I vote yes so everyone pays a little. Like we do for healthcare and roads etc.
If a pizza joint owner gets rich during the olympics then its good for him. Why does everything have to be about you?
And no, its not that I dont care. I just dont mind paying a little for this 'party'. Just like i did for the parties I organized.

I'm in favour of the games, but I still think the yes side would have been better managed by a pack of dogs chasing cats. The real concern is if they can bungle it this badly when they're just trying to 'sell' it, what happens if they actually have to execute?
