The media embargo is over and pictures of the inside are available.

This looks like a pretty remarkable place. Wow. Snohetta appears to have designed something amazing.

I can't wait to check it out! And also to find the window etching we did as part of our family's donation!

Going to go tomorrow to see if we can find our window etchings, too. Got one for the kids and one for the wife and I.
Wish we could go to the Chris Hadfield talk, but it was full already when I checked last week.

I have to admit I am VERY jealous of this. Modern library design, especially in Canada, has been nothing short of breathtaking the last few years. I'm thinking of this, and the new library in Halifax as well.
Makes me hopeful that maybe, eventually, we can get some new digs at my library!

I’m excited to check it out. It’s a beautiful building we can be proud of.
I was asked by Snohetta to use my photo of a chinook arch in an art installation. I’m nervously excited to see how that turns out.

It may not be a new library but i am looking forward to the new NB Museum on the waterfront. Hopefully it spurs on more Waterfront development in SJ

Add me to the excitement about this.
My 2 young kids kept asking for status updates. My oldest and I even went for a tour of the outside, while under construction, she was so excited about it.

I work downtown so might pop over at lunchtime today to get an early check out of things.

And I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I can't state how much libraries matter. My kids treat going to them almost like Christmas day, and could pull out books and sit and look/read for hours.

The electronic resources help foster this too. Non-stop borrowing of audiobooks and ebooks. All the tv shows, movies, etc e-resources also seem really good.

I agree libraries matter. But for the amount they spent on this one which is located in downtown where you have less children it feels like a waste of money. How many children can take advantage in this library? I wish the city built more libraries in other parts of the city instead of one big one downtown.

I think they have built like 3 to 4 new libraries in the last few years plus upgrade the one by Westbrook Mall.

I work downtown as well and once in a while I will go stop by the downtown library and surprised there are actually lots of children there. They actually had a whole floor dedicated just for a children's section.

There are new libraries all over the city. We visit the Quarry Park one frequently.
There's more to libraries than just the books, especially with this downtown one. They've incorporated so many spaces to allow for more events of all sizes. It's really going to become a hub for activity for many groups within the city.

I think the mistake many people are making is classifying this as a library in the traditional sense. Like the ones we grew up with. It is so much more.

I managed to get a ticket to the Chris Hadfield talk tonight so I'm really looking forward to checking out the space.

Not to doxx myself, but my wife was heavily involved in this project for the last few years. She's thankful it's done and we're excited to be at the ceremony this morning to finally open it up. It's truly an incredible space.
Calgary is lucky that so many competent groups were involved in it's creation.

The hoarding wall is down and it looks stunning:

It's all over the radio on QR77 about the grand opening. I'm really interested in going to check it out. Supposedly it's pretty jaw-dropping once you walk in. A glass floor above the LRT tracks. And the hand railing are heated! It's also close to the drop in Center. A lady being interviewed mentioned that it's going to work hand-in-hand with the DIC and their residents to get rid of the stigma of 'dirty homeless people' and to have social programs available to them to help them get back on their feet.
I think that's a great idea. Yes there will be security and a code of conduct to follow. But instead of shunning them and keeping them out because some NIMBY's are scared of them, it's a welcoming environment to all people to show that they are still people who need our help and the library will be involved in making their lives better.

Edmonton's new arena gets marketed as a new district to attract people and have many activities because of the arena. I can't help but feel that the city of Calgary has a fantastic opportunity to do the same with this library. Combined with the redesigning of the East Village, there's huge potential here for Calgary to have a similar type district.

Looks like a pretty cool place and I'll be heading down to check it out next week.
