After the first month of the season, the Flames have scored 4 empty net goals, and have scored 3 times with the goalie pulled. Each of those is only one less than the team's total for the entire season last year.

Watching all those Calgary - Edmonton games in the 80s, I remember the trait mentioned most about Fuhr was that his team might go down a goal but he wouldn't give up that next one to go down by 2. This Rittich performances was very much in that vein. He let one in, but kept that crucial second goal out. He definitely looks calm and solid out there.

Did I mention he looks calm?

One other observation is that we've already seen a couple of real excited team celebrations so far this year, capped by tonight's Tkachuk goal. Maybe it's all the new faces or just a different approach by the coaches, but the players sure look like they're invested in each other and the team. They've had some hiccups but morale seems to be stronger than before.

Just finished watching the game. Flames played another solid road game. They were the better team that deserved to win, especially it being their 3rd game in 4 nights.

I thought the forecheck was really good and caused lots of turnovers. Rittich played well and Andersson (and Valimaki) continue to show they belong.

The only concerning thing is the PP. They were only dangerous when they continually moved the puck. That was only because Buffalo was aggressive on their PK. It would make it much easier if they converted on just some of their opportunities.

Very successful road trip and month of October for Peters and crew.

It’s criminal how little respect Giordano gets in the media and around the league. That guy should have a Norris (2015, even with the injury), and if he keeps this up he could very well be in the conversation again.

Shades of 2014-15 for sure. But this time with much better possession numbers.

How many goals with goalie pulled did we score that year?

It was over 10 I recall.

The 6-5 play keeping in the zone has been stellar. Pulling goalie with over 2 minutes to play if ozone faceoff has been bold.

I realize that you are looking at the month of October but hard to compare when each year it is a different number of games so points are slightly misleading. Good start but 09-10 is arguably better.

Wasn’t hugely surprised with how it played out, Buffalo was sloppy and only got a point from a Herculean effort from Hutton. Deserved win by Calgary, glad it was a decent game from both sides and both teams got points out of it!

Our D depth is so bad though. It will (likely) be what costs us a playoff spot.

Haha, I used to be quite a bit more hot headed with the hockey debates, but one learns that when you’re overwhelmed 10,000 to 1, it’s better to be respectful and keep your cool.

That’s why I posted in the morning and not immediately after we lost lol.

Plus it’s not like you guys are Leafs/Bruins/Flyers fans :P

Hat's off to you. I feel like there's some common ground between Sabre fans and Flames fans..

Robbed of a Stanley Cup.
Teams have been pretty abysmal in the past 10 years.
Haven't had solid goaltending since their franchise starter left.
Bright futures for both teams coming into the 2018-19 season.

It's just a shame I will have to hate you in the Calgary Buffalo cup final this year

exactly. I like it when the coaches just nod, shake hands and go to the room. "Business as usual, nothing to see here."

To me that's crazy in the first month they have almost matched the late game resolve they had over an entire 82 game season. That alone gives me hope things will be different this season.

The Flames already have 3 wins when trailing after two periods, best in the league. Anaheim has 2, they are the only other team with more than 1.

It's refreshing to see for sure. It's almost like Peter's has this team playing the full 60 minute hockey game and will not accept player's checking out mental from the game.

Yeah, there’s only one year with more losses too - points percentage would be a better way to compare. Still a good start.

It's so huge for the team to get 4 pts in 24 hours. Keep feeding that snake boys. 5/6 points, including a comeback point vs the Cup Champs.

Still too early to say if the team has truly turned the corner and learned their lesson from a couple stinkers last week. But things look good for now at least. You couldn't ask for a better response, especially from the goalies. Only 1 goal each in B2B games, where they both played lights out.

The Rangers, Flyers, Wild and Preds all do us a solid. Nice to see the Flames take advantage of the OOT scoreboard, when in seasons past it seemed like they couldn't take advantage of other teams helping us.

It's kinda funny. Oilers media was whining about how tough the Oilers early season schedule was - but they have played fewer games and have had more teams in the 2nd half of back to backs while playing mostly the same competition and having a long home stand.

Flames haven't said anything about the schedule but it's been a grind so far.

Played the most games in the league including a stretch of 5 in 8 days. Have had a heavy road schedule - 8 road games vs. 5 at home. Already had two east coast road trips. Haven't played a team in the 2nd half of a back to back yet. Have played 4 teams that had 3 days rest before their game with Calgary. Only had one break of 2+ days. Oh yeah and went to China for the pre-season trip as well.
