Need Headphone Help
I'm looking to buy my brother a good set of headphones for Christmas. I need to know where around Calgary I can find places where I can try and buy brands such as Sennheiser, Audio-Technica and Grado. Also, I would like to be able to get some good advice from the people who work there. In other words, I am NOT going to be shopping at FutureShop.
Also, if anyone has any brand recommendations, I would like to hear about that, too. I am probably looking at some closed, circumaural headphones around $100 or a little more.
Thanks for any advice you can give.

MDR V600's by Sony are killer and are available everywhere most Sony Stores should have 'em...other than that Panasonics as a brand are usually good.
Be sure to look at the frequency response...the greater the range the better

I know you can buy good headphones from the source....but I wouldn't take any advise that they give you. Do your research somewhere else.

I own the Grado SR60 and really like them but might not be what you are looking for if you prefer a closed design. People around you will definitly be able to hear what you are listening to with Grados.
You can try going down to General Audio or K&W Audio and see what you like.

I would do my research, and maybe even shopping over the net.
I can't think of any stores that could give you solid advice in town.
start at Cnet and figure out which ones you want first

Nice pair of headphones you're looking for. I'm personally big on the AKG line-up right now, infact I just picked up a pretty sweet set at Axe Music a few weeks ago. Still breaking them in, but they're sweet so far.
Speaking of Axe, why don't you try there? I'm pretty sure they carry some or all of those brands.

Anything by Sony is garbage IMO. Basically anything by the big "name-brands" doesn't do it for me. But I guess for those of you who like noise.... Kids stuff.
There is so much out there that totally, and utterly puts the smackdown on name-brands like "Hony", panasonic, phillips etc. if you look hard enough and are willing to spend a little bit more.
Check out headphone.com actually.

i have those beauts, got them last xmas originally for my guitar at long and mcquade, the only difference is that they have an extremely long chord hence for guitar playing, but they're awesome. i will never go back to earbuds, best headphones i've ever used (however im not exactly accustomed to many headphone sets). no problems with em, decent price. very comfortbale

Wow, thanks for all the advice, everyone. It really piled up while I was out doing a little shopping for other family members. Without singling everyone out by name, I will say that I will take all the advice to heart and make sure I do my research and check out all the places/models people have suggested.
Thanks again.

Yeah I have had 3 pairs of AKG and they were all fantastic, my favorite by far. I would go with the DJ ones as they have more sound volume and won't need an amplifier (or Pre-Amp). Quality is exceptional, like the guy said above check out AXE or Mother's Music.

Generally I agree with you, I used to work in the Chinook Sony Store and know how crummy some of their stuff is...but once in a while the big names can make a decent product.
But if price is no object then the esoteric brands are the way to go...

I half expected a reply along the lines of "nuh uh! Sony is dah best". I get forced into audio debates with idiots far too often. Good that you agree though. I've never heard that peticular set of headphones, may have to give it a listen, though I naturally doubt they're anything special. By default.

Grado's rawk
I have the Grado SR80's and they are Amazing. The only downside(s) to the Grado's are the comfort factor. Especially if you wear glasses (which I used to). Even w/o glasses, they can still make your ears a little sore after lengthy use. But, you slowly do get used to them and I have my headphones on at least 6 hours each day if not more. But, as far as bang for your sound-buck you aren't going to get much better than the 60's or 80's (better bass).
