“This is untenable,” Nenshi wrote, warning he would ask council to terminate the bid if a deal could not be reached.
Clearly he was pushing hard for it, but at least in the end he sees the unreasonable way that this is going down.

I am pleased that Nenshi and council didn't get desperate and find the other 430 million required to get the matching funding.

For the first, and last, time ever I can give Trudeau and Notley credit for doing the right thing.

guess if Calgary wanted tons of stuff for Calgary, they should have ponied up more.
370 million out of of 5.3billion doesn't seem like much of a contribution.

now that they'll have that extra 370 million, they can use it to build a new hockey rink.

They didn't do the right thing. If they were cool to it, they should have said so 6 months ago, at least.

So if the Olympic bid falls through, and the feds still have $1.5 billion (or was it $1.75 now?) burning a hole in their pocket, what other cheaper event can we host in Calgary in order to claim that cash?

Ping Pong World Championship in the new field house?
Starcraft Championship in a new NHL arena?
Ultimate World Cup in a brand new outdoor stadium?

All of the above?

It's......alive????

A spokesperson from the mayor's office said negotiations between the city and federal government continue on funding for a potential 2026 Olympic bid, despite a report in the Calgary Herald saying a committee will be asked to recommend killing the bid on Tuesday.

The Herald said the information came from a senior municipal source with knowledge of the negotiations.

The mayor's office said a report based on the conclusion of the negotiation talks is to go to the Olympic assessment committee tomorrow.

Coun. Ward Sutherland said he hadn't heard anything about a recommendation to cancel the bid process, but said he did get notice that the committee meeting had been bumped from 1 p.m. to 9:30 a.m.

But sums up the process really well. We can't even get continuity or consistency with leaks.

Whatever amount it is, not a penny will be spent in Calgary. Possibly a PanAm or Commonwealth Games bid in Ontario?

Well if the major concern is about security costs with the Olympics, why don't we ask them to pay for the new NHL arena, reno McMahon, build the fieldhouse, and put in money for the NC portion of the greenline. That'll be about $1.5B in total right? Therefore Calgary still gets money from the feds.

But there would be no reasons for the feds to do it, so that's not gonna happen.

I think that this was brilliant politics by Notley. They come out and give a deal-killing amount to the Calgary games, which means they never have to actually pay for them and don't anger their Edmonton base, but at the same time they get to claim that they did what they could afford and weren't willing to throw out fiscal responsibility.

Wondering when Esports will replace the Olympics entirely... I'm guessing the security costs would go down significantly, as would the condom budget...

It's only brilliant if the NDP think they have a realistic shot at winning the next election.

Well they're clearly delusional in a few areas, so they probably do!

Council will be asked to kill Calgary 2026 bid this week

Quote:
Council’s Olympic committee will be asked Tuesday to withdraw from negotiations for a cost-sharing agreement to fund the 2026 Winter Games, cancel the Nov. 13 plebiscite and end any further work on a bid.

Following an intense weekend of negotiations, a recommendation is expected to come forward at Tuesday’s meeting of the Olympic committee to kill the bid.

“There were some last-ditch efforts happening (Monday) morning to salvage the bid, but it’s over,” said a senior municipal source with knowledge of the negotiations.

Committee members will be asked to immediately terminate the bid and cancel the plebiscite.

The decision won’t be final, however, until a full vote of council can be held Wednesday.
