Awesome, hope you don't go too far off the deep end when the bid is cancelled later today. But hey you can at least blame Trudeau so there's that.
There is that.
One of the main reasons I'm actually in the 'For' camp is because of Nenshi and as soon as idiot Justin moved the goalposts instead of just charging ahead Nenshi immediately responds with:
"Hey, if you're not going to hold up your end of the bargain this is going to be fiscally irresponsible and we're going to drop it."

If you think that's a waste of money, fine but it's not like the Feds aren't going to spend it somewhere so why not here?
Precisely. That cash is burning a hole in their pockets and seeing as we've been Trudeau Sr. and Jr.'s favourite punching bags since the dawn of time we may as well at least take some of their free money and really kickstart some infrastructure programs.
Once again: The Olympics? I largely dont care. What I care about is whats left when the party is over and everyone has gone home and how much other people paid for it.
If you told me that if we say yes we get an LRT to the airport, the Green Line done immediately and some other major projects around town then you'd have my vote.
Right now I'm still hesitant about the plan to use Whistler. I dont like that part of the plan.

Hey if I was supporting a position that was heading to defeat, I'd hold out all hope possible too. Maybe there is an Olympic Hail Mary coming, who knows. But that's what the Yes side needs right now.
I think if it gets defeated it's going to be close. My gut is that there is a silent majority that would love to see the games in town and don't break it down on hardcore tax burden analysis.

Agreed. They definitely need a Hail Mary today. But it’s my opinion that if a deal is reached, the plebiscite will pass. We’ll see.

You are aware it's getting cancelled if there isn't a major change from the current situation right? And even if there is some financial Hail Mary here, the whole process has been so horrifically handled I'm not sure it'll pass anyway. There will need to be a lot of surprises (arena deal, significant infrastructure commitments that actually matter) I think to win people over.

Assuming the plebiscite proceeds, I don't think people will think about it as critically. Also, the arena deal is far more a focal point for Flames fans; that discounts the number of people who aren't Flames fans or are apathetic towards hockey who also get to vote.

so i am guessing right now you are a no vote - given the bid does not include much in the way of goodies like an LRT line?

Absolutely. If there is no significant infrastructure as part of the deal then the Olympics can pound sand.
I'm pretty much on the same boat. If there are set plans for significant infrastructure, then I'm all for it. I wish it wasn't tied to the corrupt Olympics, but would suck it up as a necessary evil as part of getting access to funds for the city. You tell me you want a 2 week party without infrastructure spending? Yah, GTFO. Not interested.

It was a stupid proposal even in the best case scenario. 3 billion in tax money for a field house and a curling rink sucked from the start. I never understood the "sensible yes vote". What makes Olympics profitable in the long run for host cities is when they add to their appeal with new stuff, infrastructure, amenities and attractions. No one's coming here on a curling trip.

I think that's kind of unfair... you can't just ignore the (presumably life-extending) renovations and housing. Yes, it's very light on "new stuff" but "new stuff" shouldn't be the be all end all of it.
But like I said I think it's done now. The province doesn't want to pay the ask, who knows what the city's willing to pay (but it clearly isn't the difference between the provincial ask and the provincial give), and the Feds policy is matching dollars (so that 300M shortfall from the province becomes a 600M shortfall).
Council’s Olympic committee will be asked Tuesday to withdraw from negotiations for a cost-sharing agreement to fund the 2026 Winter Games, cancel the Nov. 13 plebiscite and end any further work on a bid.
Following an intense weekend of negotiations, a recommendation is expected to come forward at Tuesday’s meeting of the Olympic committee to kill the bid.
“There were some last-ditch efforts happening (Monday) morning to salvage the bid, but it’s over,” said a senior municipal source with knowledge of the negotiations.
Committee members will be asked to immediately terminate the bid and cancel the plebiscite.
The decision won’t be final, however, until a full vote of council can be held Wednesday.

I think it's fair because the majority of yes voters' profess reasoning that the Olympics have a lasting economic benefit...that's not always true. I can't find the article but there is research that shows quite clearly that there is no lasting benefit if the host city isn't getting significant new infrastructure and amenities.
We can spend our 800 million and get most of what we need that was coming via the Olympics and not take on the risk/likelihood of a massive shortfall. Or we could build an arena and know exactly what our net economic benefit will be over years.
That's too bad. I would have liked to see the games one more time in Calgary in my lifetime. I think it could have been a memorable and successful event for the city.

Can we get a World Expo here? I want a monorail!

What a god damn mess. Embarrassing. I'm not even sad - infuriated at how badly it was bungled by all orders of government.
I know a lot on the no side will be annoyed and say it was a waste. Fine. I think the yes side and those that put time and energy into this should and will be even more pissed off.
