By and large he's been taking it like a champ. He's no dummy. We may look back at him a few years down the line after he demands a trade and he becomes similar to Hall in becoming even greater outside the Oilers stench and the dark years will be forever be stories of lore.
Remember, he didn't pick this.

Lol, that image has stuck with me from day 1. Was a perfect prologue to the story we all knew was coming.
He sat there motionless, pondering his next move.
'Could I do it? Could I be the next Great One?' 'No...' he pondered 'there isn't anything good coming from that stench'. And with that, Connor slumped in his chair accepting the cruel fate that awaits top-players entering the NHL.
Chapter 1: Hey Connor, it's Mess.
He certainly has been taking this like a champ though, yes. Hell, even signing the contract he did was pretty telling of the character this guy has. With everything going on, and everything inevitably to come I don't think anyone would have criticized McDavid too much (outside of homer media) for making a career decision that allowed him an option to get out.

It won't even come to a trade. Edmonton will lose him for nothing when he walks away as a UFA just like Tavares did.
Coincidentally, the timing will almost be perfect for McIcetime to replace Tavares in Toronto when their respective contracts are up.

I still believe, that behind the scenes, McDavid's camp gave Katz an ultimatum that he will not sign with the Oilers unless they cleaned house once the Oilers won the draft. I still think it was too much of a coincidence to see McTavish demoted, Lowe pushed behind the scenes, and hockeymen being put in place within a week of winning the draft lottery (as fun as it has been to see the comedy of errors with Chiadenfreude and McLellan, they were seen as a big step up).

It's one of those conspiracy theories I love to think happened, but we may never know the truth behind. I think we may see some cracks if the Oilers are out of it by December again.

Lol, this was a gem:
"What does this mean for the organization? First and foremost, the Old Boys Club is finished. Finally. It’s like sending an old horse off to the glue factory. It was years overdue and desperately needed and now it’s finally happened."
I wouldn't be surprised one bit if there was some truth to that from the McDavid camp. The Oilers have more credibility today than they did then and it would be no surprise if the McDavid camp was very concerned about spending his career there.
Considering one old boys club was replaced with another, and they have an arguably worse roster without McDavid compared to 3 years ago... I'd imagine their fears haven't been quelled yet.
I legitimately think the 2017-18 Oilers would have their hands full with the 2014-15 Oilers...
Taylor Hall - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - Jordan Eberle
Benoit Pouliot - Leon Draisaitl - Nail Yakupov
David Perron - Mark Arcobello - Teddy Purcell
Jesse Joensuu - Boyd Gordon - Matt Hendricks
Andrew Ference - Mark Fayne
Oscar Klefbom - Jeff Petry
Darnell Nurse - Justin Schultz
Ben Scrivens

Beleskey among 10 worst active free-agent signings
Quote:
[...]But Beleskey is far from alone as an example of ill-advised spending.
Here are 10 active players skating on contracts their managers likely regret:
[...]
MILAN LUCIC, LW, Edmonton
Contract: Seven years, $42 million
Cap hit: $6 million
Expires: 2023
Scoop: The Oilers knew Lucic’s deal might eventually hurt when pen hit paper, but Peter Chiarelli didn’t expect that to be in Year 2. He finished last season with just one goal after Christmas (46 games) and only one power-play assist. The 30-year-old appeared to be off to a better start with a goal and assist in Sweden, but went the next five games without a point and was bumped off ’s line to the third unit.

LOL @ the OBC pushed out and finished. Direct quotes from the Oilers website:
CRAIG MACTAVISH
Senior Vice President, Hockey Operations
Quote:
MacTavish previously served as Edmonton's Senior Vice- President of Hockey Operations in 2012-13. He works closely with President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, Peter Chiarelli and Assistant General Manager, Keith Gretzky on the daily operations of the Edmonton Oilers.
|
SCOTT HOWSON
Vice President, Player Development
Quote:
In this role, he works closely with Senior Vice-President of Hockey Operations Craig MacTavish...
|
Not to mention Kevin Lowe and other staff members who held tenure during the past 12 seasons and are still employed. It's a shuffling of the chairs, nothing more. I don't doubt McDavid's agent forced Katz to shuffle things around. There was plenty of talk about McD pulling a Lindros and not a single person would blame him if he did. I think Katz gave into the agents threat and told him the OBC would be behind the scenes. McD and his agent bought it. And yet on the website, it clearly expresses how these guys are still making decisions and working with Peter Chiarelli up close and personal.
The OBC will never go away. Never. Even if Katz cleans house again, it's just another shuffle and it's right back where they left off.
Oiler fans used to crap all over people who even mentioned McD leaving. But IMO it's not a matter of if, but when. I truly don't think he will make it to the end of this contract. Another season in the basement, and it could be as soon as next summer.
Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part since I'm a Flames fan. But the guy is a human being like the rest of us and wants to succeed and build a decent legacy. I'd be cheering the hell out of the guy like I do with Crosby if he wasn't an Oiler.
Entertaining as hell to watch, because Edmonton is straight up no good.

The Oilers currently employ: Wayne Gretzky, Kevin Lowe, Craig MacTavish, Keith Gretzky. They also hired Coffey as some sort of skills coach but I can't find him on their site.

I see he owns a Kia dealership in Bolton and the Pickering OJHL team.

Silence in this thread because the Oilers are on a hot streak? Not on my watch. I'm actually kind of glad their doing well for now, since their was talk of big changes after the first couple games. Hopefully this settles Katz down and it can continue to be business as usual.

The oilers got an empty net goal against the preds. Take that away they have 1 win where they beat a team by more than 1 goal. Plus 3 wins in 3 on 3 hockey. They aren’t doing as well as the record suggests

It’s hard to keep this up when you are over playing your top 3 players. Everyone talks McDavids min but Nuge is 5th in mins over 22 a game. Dra is over 20
Drasaitl also has 11 points but Mcdavid has been in on 9 of the 11
Nuge has 12 points mcdavid has been in on 9.
Not one other player is playing well and really can make a case drasaitl is not driving his own line
If someone else doesn’t step up this can’t last
Puljujarvi has 1 goal that nuge banked off him and yes you may see a trend mcdavid was in on goal
Strome? 0 points so far
Lucic 2 points since the first game
Kassian finally got his first point
Brodziak has been a huge fail
Chaisson isn’t going to keep producing
Banning hasn’t progressed
Caggulia hasn’t progressed
I’m more than ok with their start. Let them think they are good

Imagine if McDavid were to go down for a month like Auston Matthews just did. The Oilers would be back in the basement so fast they wouldn't even know what hit them. The strange part is that their fans are aware of this, but seems content with the situation now that they managed to squeeze out a couple of wins. It's the same deal each and every season as they go on a win streak, everything is solved, everybody's happy, cup parade planned. Perhaps that is the thing that actually solidifies the status quo in the organization. It only takes a tiny bit of success for all the failures to fade away.
