Until Colorado has a brain fart we won't be getting your best option, the real best option is a non-playoff team in December with a decent goalie.

That sucks and we all feel for him as a person but this is a business and a team trying to win and if that has damaged his ability to be a positive part of this team then he needs to be moved. When people said last year it was because he was playing on the left side I replied that changing sides is not going to change the fact he can't make good decisions under pressure or help with his positioning in the defensive end. This year he was moved back to the right side and I was really hoping to be proved wrong but it is just not happening. When not under pressure and has a clear option to pass out of the zone he moves the puck well enough and he can jump up into the play. The problem is when he feels pressured in the defensive zone or there is no clear outlet pass to him. Either he is turning it over for a prime scoring chance or he just slaps it off the boards and down the ice for either a turnover or an icing. When the other team gets a cycle in our zone he gets lost on where he is supposed to be. Physically he also cannot contain bigger players along the boards or driving to the goal. I like Brodie as a person and I wish him all the best but he is a liability to this hockey team.

Varlamov is a pending UFA, and the Avalanche just added Grubauer at a sizeable cost. He will be a target in the summer. I am doubtful that even by Christmas will there be many upgrades on Smith available in a trade—certainly no one near the caliber of Varlamov. This was always going to be an issue that would have to wait until the offseason to completely repair. Unless something dramatic changes I believe that is how this will shake out.

This thread is stupid. Do you not think that from the moment a GM accepts a job in the NHL that he does not “feel the heat”. These jobs are never slam dunk secure.

Man, did a whole bunch of people just waste their time with the first 1843 posts, or what?
Thanks for the insight.

I still think the NHL was the best when there was the "original 21" teams and adding San Jose was okay. Too much teams now. Too many fringe players and talent pools drastically diluted. Still think Colorado is set though. Damn great team already, got Cale Makar coming soon and Ottawas #1 pick in 2019 this team might win 2 or 3 Cups.

Problem with the 21 team league was everyone made the playoffs essentially. At a 32 team league, at least you are weeding out half the teams. That is a whole lot better IMO since the season is entirely too long to begin with IMO.

That's true I never thought of it like that it was way to easy to make playoffs back then. Thanks for bringing that up.

One thing I was thinking about today. If Flames don’t make the playoffs that will be 5 straight years for Peters missing out. I actually am kind of liking the guy but I suspect he is human and you have to start second guessing your own abilities and approach at some time too.
How many coaches have gone through a stretch like that? Has to be very damn few. Trotz is an example but taking over an expansion team is very different. I know Carolina wasn’t spending a bunch of money but that was not an old school expansion roster.
I see Tippett did miss 5 straight years with the Coyotes.

#1 Goaltender

I really like tre’s overall body of work so far. My two concerns are:
1) goaltending - is there a plan B? I think there is. Smith regressing was too much of an obvious risk not to have a contingency for. And it’s too early in the season to pull the trigger on plan b.
2) coaching - it still really bothers me that no one else was interviewed, especially sutter, who wanted the job. That said thus far this season, The team seems to be playing well when they’re on, so I give peters a solid passing grade for now. The peters performance is better than the gully gong show.

TBF, I think the same thing as Rhino every time I see the thread title. Of course, it's more a Treliving general thread so it's kind of a moo point.

I can see that. At the same time, he inherited a team where Feaster had done the dirty work and blown it up. The expectation was, I am sure, that it may take time to see the fruits of a proper rebuild. A few years, say.
Year 1, the team he inherited made the playoffs and the coach he inherited won the Jack Adams. The cupboard maybe wasn’t as bare as everyone thought. The key young players on that team now have a few extra years of seasoning, and some have moved on, by his hand.
Now he has adjusted and tinkered for years. Turned that coach loose and hand selected 2 successors. The rebuild should be done by now, wouldn’t you say?
The expectations should be very different now than on day 1, and I think rhino’s observation is a lame drive by, is wrong, and contributes nothing.
Treliving should absolutely now feel the heat and despite many roster moves I like, if this coach does not make the playoffs this season, I think both Tre and Peters should be handed their walking papers.
He went all in on Peters. That’s what happens when you go all in. Boom or bust.

I'm not saying that he shouldn't feel heat. I'm saying the title is weird.
Your history is ignoring the last Hartley year, which was miserable. And it's glossing over GG's first year a bit, where they lost to the Ducks, who went to the WCF (albeit they only had to beat Edmonton after Calgary). At that point I figured they were about where they should be given that 14-15 was a complete aberration.
Yes, this team is pretty much done rebuilding but I'm pretty sure Treliving expected a goalie to emerge out of Gillies/Parsons. He's made a bunch of fairly reasonable goalie moves as interim measures but for one reason or another they just haven't worked. Goalies are simply a crapshoot.
Yeah, he went all-in on a coach. I don't know any other way to hire one, though. I think Sutter would have been ideal, but I don't know that he was actually available (I take his post-Peters statements with a grain of salt, frankly).
4 games in Peters was brilliant. Now he's an idiot, I guess.

On Hartley, the last year was brutal but a few things. 3 goalie monster interfering with normal practices, Brodie out for the first bunch, Gio coming off a major injury, Hiller putting up historically bad numbers, etc. Remember how crappy Hamilton was the first 10-20 games? Plus a GM that was pretty much forced by the Jack Adams to grudgingly re-up Hartley, and I believe that after the mess of a start, Treliving had Hartley as dead man walking. If the players sniff that, it is a self fulfilling prophecy. Ramo had started to steady things when his knee was blown out. Then they rode out the year just like last year. That was rough.
Obviously it’s too early to tell what Peters is.
The concern about Peters coming in was that he was a high Corsi / low standings guy like Gulutzan. I had concerns about how Eric Staal was always good for 70 points, but Peters was getting 50 or so out of him.
One of the knocks on Gulutzan was the team coming out slow, not ready. Peters surely was going to fix that.
Has he done anything so far to alleviate concerns? Not yet, in my mind. That’s why so many here are ready to jump off ledges.
The last few games the Flames have played slow. Like they think they are a skill team, and against teams that push the pace, they are thinking and caught flat footed. If Peters gets them on the same page, and to play fast, we have something to work with. Only time will tell
