I think playing music during the game is a great idea. Never been to an NBA game but when I was at my first Roughnecks game a few years ago it was something I really enjoyed.

It's good see some change but in reality the city has always been a very conservative city. A citys mayor is not a primary premise of whether or not it's conservative.

The premiere was a result of lesser of two evils.

If this were true then European hockey teams would have people 'watching intently' instead of cheering and singing. This isn't the case.

Canadians aren't that keen on standing out from the pack. They'll get excited, but only if the play gives reason to. Or enough are drunk from it being a weekend game.

The Dome has never had good atmosphere, with the only exception being the time frame from the 04 cup run to 08 or so. There was a window where the Dome was fun and buzzing and the fans were really great. It didn't last. Calgary sports fans are kind of... muted.. compared to other Canadian markets. It's very Ottawa like.

Back in the 90's the Dome had the reputation of being called "The Library" for who quiet it was.

I remember going to a game with my late father during that era and there was this woman sitting behind us knitting a sweater for her grandson. My dad stands up and yells something at the ref for missing a call and this woman tells my dad to sit down and shut up

Not when it comes to concerts. I've heard plenty of bands talk about how great Calgary crowds are in general and how loud they can be. Pearl Jam and Tom Petty being two of them.

We all want Shot down in Flames but I like this take on a new goal horn.

It was pretty lively during the Bruins game a couple weeks ago.

I love standing at sporting events. Makes me feel like I'm part of it. Same with concerts.

Its easy to create an atmosphere, but it would cost the Flames money so it's of course out of the question. The three sections behind the Flames net should be general admission, standing room only terraces with plenty of access to beer. Something like $50/game, $75/premium game, $100/playoffs.

The rowdy, young 18-34 year old single guys that fill those sections would create enough of an atmosphere that the rest of the arena would feed off it. I think the regulars would naturally evovle into supporters group and all of a sudden you have more than just one chant you do. You can still have your fancy boxes and expensive seats, just less of them.

Again, I know this is 1000% out of the question.

The atmosphere at the dome is fine when the team gives them a reason to care. When it sucks, it says more about the quality of the on ice product than the fans.

This isn't Edmonton.

This is just straight homerism. How can that even be measured? I mean '04 was something new for the city after 7 years of no playoffs and the trip to the finals. Of course people went nuts. But how can fan support even be measured, then compared to other NHL cities? Even if you could measure it, Calgary would most definitely not be at the top of the list.

I love the Flames with all my heart, but we certainly don't have the most loyal or most supporting fans in the province, let alone the league. Just look at what goes on around CP after a win or loss. The bandwagon is in full effect with fans in this city. Nothing wrong with that, but you compare to places like Edmonton which sells out game after game even after 11/12 years of garbage. Or Leafs fans who are willing to pay $300/game after no cup for 50 years. I would guess the Flames are right in the middle compared to other franchises when it comes to 'support'.

A lot the atmosphere IMO comes with the corporate crowd that shows up. Corporations are buying tickets and giving them to people who are at best your average viewer who will show up since it's free. At worst it's guys from out of town who come with someone who view it as a business development-type outing. These guys literally wear suits to the game, talk about drilling wells and couldn't care less about the team. Sure they will stand up and cheer when the team scores. But it's almost like they are out of their element and are simply there because NHL hockey is part of the Calgary experience and it's cool to take a client there.

The biggest factor is obviously having a winning product. The team wins, the fans will show up and support is high. But then you look at teams like Edmonton and the Leafs and ask yourself why is it those arenas are always full, even after multiple losing seasons. I think it's because they both have storied pasts to fall upon. The Oilers/Leaf management might be feeding the fans kool-aid and we know it, but it's an effective tool to play on people's feelings of the past and wanting to re-live the ol' glory days. It's why we see the Edmonton media/organization pumping the teams tires every summer, even though we all know it's going to be bunk. Society lives off of hope. The Flames in my eyes don't really do much to inspire 'hope' other then a few press conferences here and there with new players and the occasional highlight package of the 80s cup win.

I assume most of us watched last night's game as Scotia Bank Center was very quiet for the majority of the game. Granted the Leafs weren't playing well but that's a pretty quiet arena as well.
