As a Browns fan I can tell you being a lovable loser is really over-rated. I'd be over the moon to be as good as the Bengals have been.

In 2003-2004, they didn't really catch lightening in a bottle.
The only series they played against someone with a superior record was the final series they lost.
In every other series, they played a team with a worse regular season record.
Now, you might claim that they were fortunate in catching teams that may have upset some better teams, but the Flames that year were much better in the 2nf half than the first (after Kipper started playing for them). it really wasn't a shock that team went quite far in the playoffs.

I'm confused: They had 94 points. Vancouver, Detroit and San Jose all had more.

We finished with 94 points. Canucks has 101, Wings had 109 (won presidents trophy) and Sharks had 104. We beat the top 3 seeds in the West. Until the Kings won from the 8th seed the 04 team accomplished an unprecedented run of knocking off top teams.

True, we should feel lucky to not be Columbus, Arizona, or Florida fans and that's it.

7th seed Anaheim did something pretty similar the year before, beating Detroit (2nd) and Dallas (1st) before they met 6th seed Minnie in the WCF.
But back to '04, the Wings had Datsyuk, Hull, Yzerman, Shanahan, Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Chelios, Draper (who won the Selke), Cujo and a bunch of really good supporting guys.
The Canucks had Naslund, Bertuzzi, Morrison, the twins, Linden, Ohlund, Salo, Sopel, Jovo (terrible goaltending though).
SJ had Marleau, Cheecho (in his good year), Sturm, Ekman, Hannan, Stuart, Thornton, two pretty decent goalies, and an overall well rounded team.

Being a sports fan in Calgary... not an easy task:
1990 to 1994 - Flames losing in the first round every year
1994 to 1997 - Stampeders choking in the playoffs
1997 to 2002 - Young Guns!
2002 to 2004 - Feterik + Fateri!
2005 to 2013 - Flames can't even win a single playoff round
2015 to 2017 - Stampeders choking in the playoffs... again.

That’s true for the same time period. However what keeps selling tickets up there today and why in places like Red Deer there’s more Oiler fans than Flames fans is because at least they have their drug of choice ‘the past.’ We can look back at that time period and lament at more misssed opportunities and underachievement.

We need a Sutter type coach to instill a culture of hard work into this team.
|
To be fair, I was in favour of Sutter himself. Was the guy I wanted due to the lack of drive/motivation seeping through the lineup over the course of GG's tenure.
But it's still very early for Bill and so far he's done everything in-game that we could possibly ask of him.
So if this inconsistency in preparation continues we may need to look at a core transplant to really shoot some life into the team in a meaningful way.
Hamilton may have been part of that disease but he wasn't the only one since it's clear the GAF culture issue still exists without him.

Should be noted, that was Scott Thornton, who wasn't really a good player. That Sharks team did have the very notable Mike Ricci, who was, incidentally, ugly, as well as a still-effective Vincent Damphousse.

The same thing it's always been. A franchise center. Not Sean Monahan. Not Craig Conroy. Not Daymond Langkow. Not Olli Jokinen. The closest thing they have ever had was Marc Savard and he was out of shape and the coach hated him - without Bob Hartley he may never have realized his potential.
In the Flames' glory days they had Gilmour and Nieuwendyk.
You gotta be willing to go through growing pains for a franchise C. That means both terrible seasons and seasons where you keep throwing your talented center out there every shift through limited production and mistakes. The Avs did both for and with Nathan MacKinnon and while they presently lack the depth to capitalize, it's not far off for them especially as they have oodles of cap space.
Truth is, unless you have that kind of elite talent down the middle, you have no excuse to be a cap team. You're better off being patient and frugal than on the treadmill.
