On the topic of the bombs though. It seems weird that they would be sent to people where they would obviously be intercepted. There is no way anybody would expect that something mailed to any of these guys wouldn't be screened.

What do you mean fakes? There were real explosive devices involved.
Link? I haven't read anything that has actually confirmed explosives yet. One has some 'sulphur like substance' that could explode according to authorities.
