Treliving absolutely believes in Bennett he has been so reluctant to move him which I agree with. If he doesn’t figure it out under Peters then we know but I would have hated to see him traded after a couple bad seasons playing Gulutzan hockey.

The meeting with Fox's agent changed Tre's mind and he realized he had to send Fox. He made the decision that Fox + Ferland is more or less equal to Bennett and that was fair for the return we were getting.
In terms of Ferland, I loved the player when he played hard and physical, but he was all too often very comparable to Rene Bourque, he could absolutely dominate a game, or even a stretch of games, and then go absolutely silent.
I hope he gets paid this offseason, contract year and all, but I think i'm still very happy with the trade the way it went

There's absolutely no comparison between Ferland and Bourque. The only similarity that some people refer to is a racial profile!

Umm there are very real comparisons.
When both are on their game they were/are excellent and can put up serious numbers
Both also tend to be extremely streaky players.
Both look extremely disengaged at times.

I just don't understand how he was not able to do that with Guadreau and Monahan for extend periods of time? Are Aho and Teravainen really that different? Yes I know it's early.. and we have seen Ferland do this for bits of the year then completely disappear; however, I've watched a lot of Canes games and he looks REALLY good. Contract year maybe? I don't know but I am kind of disappointed he is not in our lineup anymore... I mean we gave Neal 5 Mil to play on the third line...
|
Ferland absolutely had great stretches here. Off the top of my head, his 2015 playoffs, his 16-17 stretch that started in the Nashville game showed he could hang with the top line. Then his best stretch in the first half of 17-18 where he was on pace for almost 40 goals if I remember correctly.
Guy is extremely underrated. He’s not just a big shot or a bigger hitter either. He has great offensive instincts and makes a lot of small plays that can lead to offensive zone chances. Im not surprised to see him playing so well with Carolina. Good for him. It looks like he’s setting himself for quite the contract this offseason if he can continue to play well.

Wow that's one way to escalate things.
Boy Wonder isn't wrong, Ferland and Bourque are both extremely talented players when they want to be but also disappeared quite a bit as well.
The only thing you can hope for Ferland is he can be a consistent threat over Bourque who ended up out of the NHL a few years later.

IMO, Ferland is a very unique player. Odd blend of physicality and offensive skill that isn't common. That alone makes him super valuable... typically these players don't break out until they've got a few seasons to figure it out. Yeah, he's got consistency issues but I think his deal is that he started figuring it out last year and Carolina is now reaping the rewards.
I don't think he was an easy player to give up, but the ability to manage the cap (or the anti-Chiarelli as I would call it) with Lindholm (who's got his own unique skillsets, i.e. RHS, faceoffs, etc...) makes it a pretty one-sided win for the Flames if you compared the two players with their contract situations.

If Carolina insisted on Fox being in the deal then I am glad Tre switched up Bennett with Ferland as he made it seem like it was evening things out but in all reality, he saved the player with higher potential by dumping a guy we would never have seen dress. Another great asset management play!
|
I disagree his value was near zero and doubt Treliving valued him as such. If he did, that’s an example of extremely poor asset management, not great asset management.

Terevainen is a good player. Scored 64 points last year.

Oh, I agree, but at the time they acquired him it was totally uncertain what he'd ultimately become - a passable top 6 player, or the guy he is? Given what he turned into, they paid almost nothing to get him, which was my point. They got an entire top line while giving up almost no assets in return for them - didn't even have to spend a 1st rounder on Aho. And they're not paying them much money, either (though that will no doubt change soon).

Good for Ferly. Will always have fond memories after that series vs. Van. Hope he lights it up and gets paid.
Good hockey trade that so far is paying off for both sides.

He's big, he's fast, he's physical, he has a great shot, he can fight, he is - at his best - a true power forward. But sometimes he is invisible, and sometimes he doesn't utilize the ample skills at his disposal.
Which one of them am I talking about?
(spoiler: both - though in fairness, I think Ferland is less frustrating than Bourque. But Bourque's consistency problems were amplified in later years. For the first couple years Bourque was a beast)

Also the comparison he was making was completely apt. A player who dominates for stretches and then disappears?
Yeah, that's Bourque to a tee. Remember when he started the season off hot and was anointed the next captain of the Flames? And then he was chased out of town soon after?
If you want to draw a comparison of a player who goes hot and cold for Ferland, Bourque is your man.

Differant players again. Ferly is faster and has a heavy shot. He is undefeated in fighting so far. I don't ever recall Rene good at those things.

Ferland's name also has an F and A while Bourque's has neither. But way to miss the point.

Ferland never coasted like Bourque, ever. If you think they are comparable, then you clearly don't remember Bourque.
This place is terrible sometimes, how it turns on players as soon as they are no longer Flames property.

Yup, Hamilton goes from lovable meme-creating banana phone photo bomber to weirdo who doesn't play well with others

Ferland is one of my favourite players and I wish him well in Carolina. But I can still see comparisons to Bourque. Doesn't mean I think they're the same. Just means there are a lot of similarities.
Not everything is hate.

Wow. Bourque was perceived as having issues with effort but averaged something like 54 points over 82 games in Calgary.
He had such a hot start one year that people were wondering if he would displace Iggy as the top winger. The disappointment was that he ended up with 50 odd points
And the current opinion is that people are turning on Ferland when he left?
Bourque wasn’t god’s gift to hockey. His years after Calgary were nothing to write home about. But his years in Calgary were a heck of a lot more productive, on average across the whole time good and bad, than Ferland’s best year.
And Ferland coasted his ass off on the 4th line many games when he thought he was a scorer.
Silly.
